Hey Everyone,

I just setup my curves as instructed by the align instructions (100% throttle across the board and +/- 9 degrees pitch) and now the battery gets insanely hot and I lose power very quickly. I am running the 325mm blades and a 12t pinion. The battery gets very hot even just on hover flights. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do just basic aerobatics at the moment, but would like to keep batteries from exploding (which I am afraid of if the batteries get much hotter. No Swelling yet though). Thanks

Adam

Well... with so much detailed info.....

Which battery, what size, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
Which ESC....
Which motor?

Help us...help you

To lower Amp draw, be sure, the belt is fairly loose and lube with silicone, adjust motor pinion back lash to give a little play, and adjust your throttle curve in norm flight mode so the motor has a chance to wind up before pitch is applyed.

You are simply asking too much of a battery that can't keep up. Instead of setting the power to 100%, get a Head tach and measure your headspeed, set it at a comfortable and REASONABLE speed and check the motor temperature. Re-adjust as necessary. There is aboslutely no reason to run 3000 rpms.

Sorry guys,

I am new to the heli thing and not used to providing the relevant details. I am a 5 year airplane veteran, so while I have some lingo down, much of it I am still to learn.

430L Align Motor
35X ESC (the 6 volt bec one)
Battery is a common sense 3s 2100mah 15c.

I figured I was just asking too much of the batt. Also, am i over speeding the motor? Up here at 6000 feet with temps reaching the 80's the blades can spin extremely fast, we are talking 3400 rpms in the middle of idle up. I am guessing this isn't so good? Please help me set my curves to where I can fly 3d on the 15c batt, however if the best way to go is to just get a 25c batt, i'll go that route.

I would recommend slowing the HS down a bit to help on the discharge rate, and temp. Check the flying characteristics. IF you need more power (due to altitude) maybe you can upgrade to a higer "C" rating. But I would rely on somebody with more experience to confirm that statement.

You have some special circumstances that require advice from somebody that knows a little more than I do. I'ts time for my elegant retrogrgade. Sorry. I will stay lurking for a while to find out the answer to your question.

As far as altitude goes, I can't help there but can suggest shooting for a head speed of 2700-2800. Do this by lowering your pinion.
I now I've seen 9T for 3.17 shafts somewhere.
Can you give us a little education as to how altitude affects propulsion? I now helis at high altitude have lift issues but aside from my simple understanding of molecular weight at sea level vs at high altitude, I don't know. Could stepping up to 335mm blades help move more air and lowering head speed due to reduced drag help, or a different air foil?

Altitude affects engines as well as aerodynamic efficiency all because the air is less dense at our altitude. As temperature goes up, the effects of altitude get even worse. Do a quick google on density altitude. It should explain everything needed to know.

I have gone up in diameter with electric airplanes because an electric engine isn't affected by altitude but because there is less air, the drag and lift produced by the prop/rotor is less resulting in a higher rpm. 335mm is a good idea. Maybe I'll go buy one and check it out. I'll post results, and thanks for the help so far.
