I am picking up my Nitro models Yak 54 3D this weekend - I am online searching for engines - can anyone tell me if the
Magnum XL-91RFS 4-Stroke would be ok for this model?
What I am really wanting to know is - will it be to big? Will i get it in the cowl without having to chop holes in it etc?
Anyone else have this setup?

Status: offline 		The engine will do fine in the Yak.

To minimize cowl cutting, you should consider mounting the engine inverted.

You WILL have to cut the cowl, but with the engine inverted you can make one large cutout on the bottom that serves multiple purposes.

E.G. it can both permit the cowl to be attached, and provide enough clearance for the muffler extension.

At worst you can also use an O.S. Extension tube pipe to bring the muffler outside of the cowl or further back too.


Another option would be to use a Pitts Style muffler and mount the engine inverted.

But this would require BOTH a side cut and a bottom cut.

I would go with the inverted.

Ok, I am just waiting to hear about a price for an ASP 91 AR, although I think I will prob end up buying the Magnum 91, I was presuming i would end up mounting it inverted, because of ease and muffler issue, so I think thats how its going to be!

Status: offline 		Fit the engine in the plane first W/O cutting for the muffler and pipe.

THEN once you have everything ready, start worrying about the muffler and pipe.

I'll bet you'll get several ideas on how to go about the rest.

Since you did not cut the cowl for the muffler, those options will remain open to you.

Remember that the Magnum uses the same sized piping as the OS so you have a lot of possible choices.

Status: offline 		I didnt know about the Magnum having the same piping size as the O.S, that will make things handy if needed. I have just had the price back for the ASP - and i can get the Magnum for approx NZ $100 less - I think i will stick with the Magnum then, they seem to have pretty good reviews etc - unless there is anyone out the wanting to tell me differently.

Status: offline 		I am running the Magnum .91 on mine. It is pefect. I am using an APC 15 x 4. I have mounted it inverted. With stock mufler, not much cutting of the cowel.

You will be pleased with the performance.

Awesome one DP,

Thats what i was waiting to hear, someone with the exact setup......... couple days away from picking it up, will order the engine next week - should be in the air in no time!!!
I am only buying this smaller model because my WM Extra 300S is proving to be a little big for any fields around the area - very annoying, its such an awesome plane!!

That my WM Extra 300s - wingspan is 2m (80' for you guys), and I have aMoki 180 up front.
I Picked up my Nitro Yak 54 3D today, quality looks awesome, solid little plane! covering is spot on! no wrinkles or anything!
Start work on it this week!
