Last Sunday was test day for the pusher jet. Nice plane, we have about 6 people interested in buying one in our club. Here is the question"

Wing was missing holes drilled for the landing gear.......

CG is 260mm or 10.3 inches from the leading edge at the wing where it meets the fuse. By installing the main gear per the instructions and pictures of complete models on your site with the tires are to the rear of the wing, they are over 3" rear of the CG. This makes the plane impossible to rotate on the main gear. Is this correct or should the main gear face forward, then they are 1/2 inch behind the CG where most planes main gear are located.

Only changes to the arf were - JR Mini Servos with 45oz torque instead of micro servos, CG is correct, 61 sized motor, CG correct. Plane uses all of our runway, will not rotate and take off, more thow than recomended on the elevator. I tried pushing down on the tail, geez It took many lbs of force, the main gear by location make it extremely hard to lift the nose off the ground.

Anyone have any ideas?

As to the build... Only changes to the plan, added 30 minute epoxy to the main tube not just the wing and fuse seams, the nylon bolts holding the tail to the wing were too short for the forward nylon bolts and metric, replaced them with metal shoulder head cap screws as no metric nylons available in this size locally. The wing was missing holes drilled for the main landing gear, used JR 45oz mini servos cost 21.99 each at our local hobby store, cheaper than micros, and stronger.

Great looking plane - great job guys.

I have the latest version that is retract ready.

I noticed that the manual shows the gear wire facing one way for the fixed gear, and then the opposite way for the retractable gear.

Is this what you are asking about?

It would seem that the pictures have the gear position backwards.... although I've just started the build.

OpJose,

Which Bobcat did you buy? Is it the Bobcat 50 or Bobcat 90?

Are the wings sheeted with balsa or are they covered with monokote type?

What retracts is it ready to accept?

I've been trying to get these questions answered by NotroPlane, but they have no interest in supplyig any information.

Thanks in advance

The BobCat 50. The new one labeled retract ready.

It's not that they have no interest, they don't know either.

They just received these planes, and when I received one they asked me to have a look to see what would fit.

There are various candidate retracts that will fit. I'm exploring this now. The big question is what are the least expensive that will fit and still do the job w/o buckling or bending yet still work reliably. There does not appear to be enough space for mechanical retracts w/attached servos, but I'm awaiting some mechanical retracts to see if these will fit as well.

I don't understand the "sheeted" question as a ) Yes the wing is sheeted, & b ) yes it is covered with a monokote looking covering.

So it's not either / or.

The instructions include pictures from BOTH the non-retract and the re-tract ready plane making things even more confusing.

The gear areas are well supported with hardwood blocks on either side.

I also noted that the servo mounts now have three sheets of hard ply supporting the servos ( GOOD! ).

There is a lot there for the servo screw to "bite" into...

The plane looks well put together.

As you can see from the photos most of the 6x0 and 5x0 series of Robart retracts will fit just fine.

Mechanical retracts will be problematic as there is no existing area to mount the required retract servo (s), nor is there space ( without modifications ) for mechanical retracts with connected servo mounts.

Most pneumatic retracts in the 6-18lb range will work, though I'd advise to go with the ones for the higher end weight to improve resiliancy.

The air tank cutout is a very nice touch!

I've ordered and will be installing a set of Robart 510 pneumatic retracts in this plane.

e.g. the Robart 521W1 Tri Gear

I'll post pictures of the process.

Well shoot I ordered the wrong ones...

The 520W1's are PERFECT.

I ordered the 521W1 unit instead.

The main gear fit PERFECTLY... however the nose gear has the wrong orientation... the 520W1's are what you want to use.

Note, the provided tank with the 520W1's is rather small. The plane could stand the larger tank instead... so you may want to consider the purchasing the items seperately.

I have a set of spring air 305's that I am going to mount in a retract ready Bobcat 50. The main gear will fit fine. However, the nose gear will need some mods to work properly. The rail is set for the gear mounting flange on the wrong side. I will need to cut the rails and recess them up into the fuse.

Hi Opjose,
Did you ever complete the retract installation with the 520`s?
I`m looking at doing the same, you got any pics?

Cheers

Steve

Yes, no problem, it works great.

The hardest part was dealing with the nose stearing.

Here is how I ended up doing it, but this is not necessarily the best or a "good" solution.

Thats a good solution! I think I may go for a fixed nose leg as steering on the ground is not that important to me.

Thanks for quick reply!
