I think I've finally decided on the right plane for this little engine - a '38 Mercury

The PB 0.33 should move it along quite nicely!
The airframe allows upright mounting with plenty of engine access. Built light - should float nicely.
Thinking 3 channel as the engine has the nicest little carb - I believe this is the smallest throttle carb currently produced.
I'm going to take my time with this build.

I purchased the Mercury model from John at FAI Model Supply
http://WWW.FAIMODELSUPPLY.com

And the beautiful little diesel engine from Peter Burford

and the engine looks about right. A little exhaust short stack exiting down the side...... May have to use the prop extension or an engine stand off but will wait till I'm a bit further along to decide dependent on initial CG mock up.

Thanks Dan,
The little instrument is a beauty!
I just gotta fly it. Can't capitalize the investment sitting in a curio

Bob,

Love those old time Mini-FF models. Adding a throttle equipped engine can only add to the enjoyment.

I keep looking at those SAM .020 models but they are only allowed to use Cox .020 engines and I can't get too thrilled about the class until they allow small diesels to compete. At one time there were some guys in Canada who were trying to legalize small diesels but never did hear if the rules for the class were changed.

I think your using a nostalgic .020 model with an RC diesel is a great idea and today's lightweight radio gear makes it all possible.

Wish I could afford one of Peter's little gems.

I think Peters PB.033 is the finest .5cc diesel ever produced , its a no compromise design useing the best materials hand built by a mastor craftsman, and even with regular use should still be a handmedown to your grand kids.

Stewart,

Don't like to be all pedantic on this crisp forum, but Peter's little engine is a .33cc, not an .033 cu.in. (0.5cc).

regards
David

OK schoolmaster Owen. That makes the little diesel by Peter about .022 cu. in. displacement. Correct? Jack

Jack,
Don't make Schoolmaster Owen get his switch out

Dan,
The little oldtimers seem like a lot of fun. I've had some micro electric experience and looking forward to this one. It would be great if SAM would make this concession - but I think it will be fun anyway. I may need that throttle just to keep the wings on - perhaps a bit of carbon roving at the diehedral joints.

Stewart,

I'm hoping to pass mine to my great grand kids - Peter had quite a chuckle when I ordered an extra cylinder/piston/rod assembly for this engine. Which brings up another point. Parts availability! I'm sick of trying to find parts for discontinued diesel engines. (Anyone got a rod/piston for a John .3? ) Peter can supply any part for his engine including all the "consumables". Or you can keep it in the curio

Very much looking forward to seeing your little Mercury built RR. I have had one of these half built for the last 3-4 years, and I really should extractum digitum and get it finished.

Get busy John! Make some more dust!

I know how it goes though - I've sortof parked a couple myself

Got a little work in on the wing, laminated some carbon roving on the leading and trailing edge diehedral joints.
Don't want to risk folding this wing - to precious a payload.
And a photo of the prettier side of the engine.

Bob, have you run the engine to see how the carb performs and what the rpm range is. Thanks

I've only run up with the 6x4 but getting a solid 10k running conservative.
The 6x3 should give 11k and is the prop for this plane.
I havn't thought to tack the idle but the carb seems very effective - you can drop the revs a significant audible level.

Havn't run her up enough yet on the 6x4 to increase the revs on the 6x3.

Got some sheeting glued on!
Gear bent.
Motor hung - how many times on and off?

Leaving the carb off makes firewall bolts access easier.

RR,
You will have plenty of power for this 'plane, though you may need to try a 7 inch prop. with the frontal area.
On my web-site, I've recently posted photos of Bob's exquisite Waco UEC (FF) and some of his comments on flight.
Best of luck.
Peter

Thank you Peter, I'll run some tests on the 7" prop once I mount the engine up again.
In the meantime I've gotta get busy on my eppanage.
