I have been reading multiple posts on battery setups, and I have seen multiple posts of using a 5 cell pack with a regulator. My question is why is the regulator needed?? I thought you could use a 5 cell pack straight into the receiver. The servos usually give torque specs at 6 volts. What am I missing?? I have only used 4 cell packs in the past, but with reports of Spektrum recievers being very voltage sensitive I was considering a 5 cell pack.

Thanks,

DK

For the most part you can run a 6V pack no problem. I use them almost exclusively and don't use a regulator.

You do need to check your gear to make sure its ok though. I have some Futaba digital servos that are not recommended for 6v.

I prefer 6v its an easy way to get more out of your servos.

Just last week I put a just charged 5 cell pack in my P51, turned on the switch and.....nothing happened. I mean, the servos were powered up, but the tx was not activating them. I was using a JR 9 channel PCM rx. When I borrowed a regulator and put it in series with this battery, all was well again. Checking the voltage on this pack showed 7.4 or 7.6 volts (remember - it was just charged) and apparently this is too much for this JR rx. It worked fine on the stepped down 6 volts the regulator provided. I just ordered via ebay a couple of regulators for about $12 bucks apiece plus $450 shipping . I'll try one on one of my beater planes and see if they hold up.

Sometimes a new 6volt pack with a fresh charge will take a few seconds to settle down. I am not familiar with JR equipment but with Futaba I have seen the servos wobble some with a brand new pack. It generally takes 10 or 15 seconds of the plane being on for the voltage to drop enough so that this doesnt happen.

This only happens with a just charged pack and it only seems to happen with brand new packs. After a month or so of use I havent seen this happen.

Maybe thats the case with the JR.
