Accident occurred : Sunday, February 16, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : Kyosho Nexus
Engine : Thunder Tiger .36
Owner/Operator: "Jens"
Injuries: Multiple, nonfatal.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On February 16, at approximately 1020 atlantic standard time, a Kyosho Nexus nonregistered homebuilt light helicopter was damaged following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the helicopter under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions with winds in excess of 15 knots prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 7 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

The pilot was observed hovering in an area to the right of the field. The helicopter was struck by a particularly strong downdraft/rotor which caused it to enter a rapid descent. Altitude could not be maintained with full engine power. The left landing skid contacted the ground, then the helicopter tipped over. Minor damage was sustained by the rotor assembly, tailboom and linkage system.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

WEATHER CONDITIONS.. HIGH WINDS
ALTITUDE.. INADEQUATE
AIRSPEED.. INADEQUATE
AUTOROTATION.. NOT POSSIBLE.. PILOT IN COMMAND

Contributing Factors

OVERCONFIDENCE IN PERSONAL ABILITY.. PILOT IN COMMAND
(brutal, aren't I?
