Hi guys,

I have had my SJ50 about 6 weeks now and have been having trouble with the muffler coming loose. Initially, I had it in a Spitfire and that required a 1/2" extension to clear the fuse. I ordered one from Dub and it came with longer bolts of course. The longer bolts have a slotted head rather than the socket head bolts that come with the engine. I tightened the bolts at tightly as I could with a screwdriver. Well the muffler came loose on the very first flight. I had already done the break in on a stand using the muffler without the extension and the muffler stayed put. I did get in one flight on the Spitfire in which the muffler stayed tight.

This plane was built for our club's pylon racing and I found a better plane for this purpose, a Phoenix Strega, so I built it and transfered the SJ50 into the Strega. With the slimmer fuse of the Strega, I was able to eliminate the extension. I got out to the race on Saturday and got the plane up into the air. It was scary fast, I was jazzed! Unfortunately on my second practice lap I began to hear a slight growling sound so I landed. By the time I got the plane on the ground the engine had died and and I could see the muffler hanging by the pressure line. The rear bolt was missing and the front bolt had broken in half. I cut some new bolts to length and reinstalled it. I let it sit for a while before the races started to let the Locktite set up good.

When my heat was ready I fired it up and took off, Everything seemed fine for about half the race, I was about to lap the competition when I started loosing power. By the end of the race I was in last place. When I got the plane back to the bench I could see that the muffler had come loose again. The inside of my cowl was coated with black slime. I tried a few more times to get the muffler to stay tight but to no avail. I had to scratch from the race. Now with further inspection, I see the the hole for the rear bolt is only a little over 1/8" deep. I can only get about three turns on the bolt before it bottoms out. Is this normal? I wonder if it is possible that a small piece of bolt material had ended up in the bottom of the hole.

I plan to send the muffler to Dub for inspection and hopefully repair. I can't wait to get his new Strega in the air with some more racers. It is going to be a blast!

Blessings, Terry

Hi Terry....

the bolt holes in the muffler are over 3/8" deep.... sounds like you have a broken bolt in that one mounting hole.

Dub can take care of it... send it back.

Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the response. I got to thinking about all the hassle of sending it in and then Dub taking time away from building his engines in order to get a bolt out of my muffler and I thought the least I could do is get a small EZ-out and try. Piece of cake. Came right out. I almost feel silly for not trying it before bothering you good folks.

Now I've got it all soaking in some antifreeze to get off all the burned on slime.

Thanks again, Terry

When reinstalling the muffler on the engine, be sure to include the metal muffler gasket (a fresh one if you have it).

Sometimes when if a muffler comes loose, it will cause the mating surfaces to become a bit damaged, and it will not seal well.

you can also include a thin film of red (high tem) RTV silicone when you reinstall the muffler. Does not hurt.

What's this atifreeze trick in cleaning off the oil residue? What kind of antifreeze? How does it work?

I would love to install a gasket but I lost it when the muffler fell off. I will have to settle for some RTV at this point. I guess I will order some more gaskets in the mean time.

Hi Sky,

It is a trick a friend showed me. You take an old crock pot, fill it with antifreeze and let the motor parts sit in it over night on low. All that baked on grime will just brush away leaving a shinny new looking engine. Just make sure you lube the engine well afterwards. I have used this many times in the past with great success. I keep the crock pot on a shelf with the antifreeze in it all the time.

Blessings, Terry

Thanks Terry,
A crock pot? Is it what I call a slow cooker? I don't have an old one so I'll have to use something else.
Doug.

Hi Doug,

Yes, a slow cooker. To be honest, I bought a new one for this. They are only about $15 at Wallmart. You only need one big enough to submerge an engine. It didn't even take a whole gallon of Antifreeze.

Pretty handy to have around if you fly a lot of glow and care what your engines look like. I just cleaned the SJ50 and a Magnum 52 the same day. Both look new again.

Blessings, Terry

If you clean internal engine parts like this, be sure to oil up the engine quite well afterward.

Well, try as I may I could not get the muffler to stay tight. It seems the front hole is too badly stripped. I tried using a long bolt and putting a lock nut on the end of it but because of the angle on the back of the muffler the bolt bent when tightening the nut. Would I be better off sending back the muffler and letting Dub replace the header portion of the muffler or should I try having helicoil inserts installed. There is not a lot of meat there. Man, this has been a hassle. I sure hope it get this remedied soon.

Blessings, Terry

Hi Bob,

OK, that's what I'll do. Any idea of the turnaround on something like that? We have a race coming up in two weeks.

Thanks, Terry

I've got great news. I sent it on the 28 and It came in the mail today.

I'm blown away at the service I just got. I know this isn't news to you Bob but I just want to let anyone else who reads this know that Dub doesn't just make great engines, he is a man of his word!!!

I a new loyal customer from here on out. There will be a few more Jett engines in my stable in the near future.

Blessings, Terry
