Well, our dues pay for it. I would much rather not get the magazine and pay lower dues but thems the breaks.

Would you feel better if they had listed the membership revenue as 8,172,510 ? Then they would have broken even - which is really what occurred. The half-million they were short gets made up by the general fund, which is funded by the membership. For that matter, they could have said the membership revenue was 10,000,000 and showed a profit!

The magazine is still believed to be a necessary evil. I think they could cut costs on it, but the Board wants a glossy magazine to communicate to the membership with. I'd like to see them go to an electronic version, but many members wouldn't. Many members would rather not have the magazine at all - but reducing circulation INCREASES unit costs. There are no easy answers - it's hard to make a go of a purely commercial magazine (ask RCM), and MA isn't really a commercial magazine. It's a newsletter in magazine format. Does your clubs newsletter turn a profit?

Perhaps they should go to every other month.......

Interesting post. Just a quick calculation in my head means AMA lost a half mill last year? Or is the magazine cost part of the operating expense? If that is the case....... Out of 170,000 members, i want $8.83 refunded. LOL.

The mag will never turn a profit. The funny thing is the membership is just fine with that. They will spend till it dries up, and why not it not there money. We could sure us the money down here were losing both fields due to urban sprawl.

Since when is reporting a fiduciary fact starting trouble? Horrace is just calling to our attention the negative cash flow that Model Aviation costs the Association. The magazine should be self sustaining by advertisment, or they should go back to the mandated newsletter. The financial statement/status of the Association is a requirement. The slick magazine is not. If the advertising revenue is insufficient to sustain the publication, then the Association should go back to a newsletter format.

I, too consider the source, and with all that I know that Horrace Cain has contributed to the hobby, I'll take his word over some of you who only complain, start arguments, troll, flame, degrade, insult and embarrass everyone who does not agree with your narrow views of any situation. When you have contributed one tenth of the amount that Horrace has to this hobby, I might start paying attention to what you have to say. Until that time........

Negative cash flow? $8 per member, our cost, you know the members, that's who paid for it, not the AMA. It's part of your dues.

No matter how hard you guys press this you'll never understand that the AMA does not contol advertising rates in the magazine, ever. The only thing they can do is wait for a market shift, but thanks to the internet, will never come. The AMA magazine is not the only one feeling the pressures of reduced ad rates on paper. THEY ALL ARE.

Lets do the math. If the AMA budget and the magazine expense are separate then roughly the AMA lost 500k last year. At 170k members that is close to $2.50 each member cost in dues this year. So $58.00 plus $2.50 equals $60.50 our dues should be this year if AMA breaks even.

If the magazine is part of the final operating expense then that gives a $8.83 per member surplus. Ithink this is information worth learning, Hoss.
