I hear ya. Hecks yeah! Gotta have the training gear, even though it takes away from the true heli look, save me a boat load! Her are some pics. I found my on decals to give it a new look! Tell me what ya think

Looks good, DK. I like the dark tail boom better than the originial. Don't sweat the look, though. Things that preserve parts and battery life/flight times are important right now. Other things (and people who think they can fly) aren't. If you focus on the basics of controlling the heli, then a year from now you'll be flying better than the folks who just throw their helis against the wall to see if they stick, and laugh at people with training gear.

Man Osterizer, I sure hope so. I am patiently waiting my graduating. This is one thing that cannot be rushed if I wish to be successful at it. I'll earn my wings soon enough! Thanks for the advice though. I guess I figured since I can't fly good, might as well look good!

hey dude... I'm here to tell you, DON'T RUSH!!

last night I was flying a bit, felt a bit of confidence so I started forward flight... it actually looked like I knew what I was doing. The neighbors are watching, I'm all happy.. then of course Mr. Murphy steps in, he blows on the tail, which gives me some awesome forward speed, the heli dropped, I saved it, just in time to catch the corner of my house out of my eye and see the heli smack it! do'oh!!! (g-rated version of what I really said)

Quotes from DK:

"I just got new grips and read all your input on the HH. The 240 is the best right? "

Well, some would say the 401 (I think that's the one) is the best, but you can't use yout stoc transmitter/receiver with that one. The Futaba line seems to be the best for true HH (stability of the electronics), so, the 240 is the best choice for the stock Axe.

"Now with adding the HH should I go with the modification instructions on Heli-Max's page?"

Yes, most definitely! that is the setup that works (Rcvr to GY240 to tail ESC to Tail motor).

"When I enquired about this before at my LHS the rep told me that they had the gyro but not the other electronics but did have alternates. Can someone tell me what parts and/or alternates I can purchase if I choose not to wait for a Tower's delivery? It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I change up but at least I'll have an idea."

Somebody suggested to me to use a EVO-20 (??) ESC for the tail rather than the Electrifly C-12. C-12 has a low voltage cut-out, and the EVO just has a led that lights up (see the 'Alternative Axe parts' thread for more info) I have never lost the tail power dur to low volts cut-out, so I stayed with the C-12 (somebody else on th thread can possiblly give you better/more info).

".... sales guy suggested that I cover the whole on my carbon horizontal and tail to ive me some tail spin and frontal diving resistance..."

Solid horizontal seems like sound advice. I think I'm gonna look into that one.

"Longer tail boom
Front balancing to handle tail boom mod
Longer main blades (Align) - this allows for better control. Will have to shave and balance the blades so that the end pice will fit in the Axe blade grips."

Longer boom sounds interresting too, but did he say how to go about the 'Front Balancing'? I've read a lot lately about not adding weights to the body. Heavier bird stresses motor? shrapnel hazard, etc. Most suggestions envolve pulling the battery our some (some of you other guys jump in here and provide some help/experience).

I, still, suggest going with th JCS Flat Plastic Blades for the Axe (heavier than the Balsa, already balanced, Made for Axe, so no trimming, sturdier, flat bottoms should give better lift in 'right-side-up' flight.

" It all sounded good but I wasn't convinced."
I don't know, but to me, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about!

None of the LHS near me sell the JCS blades so I guess I have to get them from Tower then. As far as filling the holes on the fins, monocote should work too.

I want to invest in the gyro set also but $$ is tight right now. Been going to the doc's 2 times a week. They claiming I got Multiple Sclerosis. I'm not accepting that. I am trying to beat whatever it is. On my way to ther doc's now.

Enough sad stuff, we gone get this heli thing down packed soon! I think all our advice and the advice from others will be useful. Sorry to hear about the crash "thestratcat." We fall down but we bounce back!!!

I decided last night that I'll leave the cp as is for now, parts are coming in for the MX and I don't think I can do the build and the rebuild (and my motorcycle rebuild and my 18R dirt oval project) over teh weekend, therefore I'm going to let it sit for a week or so until I get everything else done.

at any rate, I still have the simulator, where else can you crash 10,000 bucks worth of toy helicopters before breakfast and walk away with a smile?

DK,
I asked Tower about 'Flat blades' and this is what they sent back:

Bad news about the MS, but there is one hell of a support group out there. Hope the wich doctors are all wet on the diagnosis.

Strat,
Sorry to hear that you have joined the 'Recently Crashed'. Oh, well, time to practice your heli mechanic skills.

well i have to say im in the same boat as everyone else here. ive crashed 4 times and the worst was my last. i accidentlt hit the idle up switch and boom down she went did the funky chicken and demo'd herslef big time. i shoul have never taken it outside. indoors im okay about 4 feet off the floor. i have all the parts to get back in the air. i was doing good too. i can hover 2 full packs without mishap and hover left right back and forth. i can stay hovering in one place for about 1 min with slight touches on the cyclic. i had it trimmed and balanced where i could lift off and stay put in the middle of my learning square. i did ad hs-55 servos and cf tail boom and blade bcp paddles and tail gear and blade and the wheel collars on the flybar. the blade cp paddles really made a difference combined with the wheel collars. dumbed the cyclic enough to not over control with my thumbs. i cut the heat sink to expose the motor vent holes and the motor runs much cooler. im gonna ad the e-flite 11.1v 800mahs lipos next to get some more run time and performance out of it and not use the heavy stock batterys anymore. im gonna also ad the futaba 240 gyro for the tail rotor and adjust the gain on the board so there is no conflict from the on board gyro. all this and ive just started back on march 16th this year. i likes it. i likes it.

Yeah the MS thing sucks and I'm leaving that in God's hands! I'm still kicking like Beckham. May not be able to save the world but I can save the city!

Back to this Heli mid-term exam! I hope I graduate before the summer ends. I had a hard landing today and broke my landing gear. Gotta hit my LHS for some more.

-Hey I read Douglas4's comments - I can use the Gyro without the ESC C-12? Will that be just as good as long as I can get the gain% proper?

I really need a blade change. My woodies just about had it. I think that's what made me crash. I got her up and she just started hooking left. At least that's the only damage. I got her under control but had to go down kind of fast to avoid my coffee table. That would have made my wife's day because ours is too old and she wants a new one. 11month's is a long time to have a coffee table you know.

We'll, I am REALLY glad I found this forum. I haven't even gotten off the ground yet. Not due to control issuses, but because evidently the little screw (I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND A REPLACEMENT THAT FITS) that holds the tail motor into the boom came out during my first battery drain. Upon the next attempt, the motor tilted enough to to destroy the tail blade. When I went to LHS for replacement, they gave me one that was too long and it went straight through the electrical wires. Now I'm waiting on a replacement set, and hoping I didn't short out the motorl. SO, until then, I sit at the computer on the G3.5 and keep practicing. Thanks for sharing all this GREAT info!

BTW, anyone know exactly the part number or size of the screw that holds the motor mount to the boom?

Hm, that's weird. That screw you're missing is about the only thing on the Axe that doesn't have a part number. I know that it's not part of the HMXE7342 screw set, so I'm hoping that that's not the one you're waiting on. You may want to give Heli-Max a call and ask them what options you have.

I've never bought a motor for an Axe tail (can you make soup from that?), but the screws probably come with that.
