I recently pulled out my Norvel .074 and put it on a newly built
Hobby Hangar Mini-Sukhoi.

What a great combo!

The engine was used on a different plane then stored for a year.
When I cranked it again, I was once again amazed at this little thing's power and throttle response. The best part is that it ran for 12 minutes on 2 oz of fuel!

i have the .061 and Sukhoi--no such luck. Can't even start my engine--it locks up at TDC and then won't budge. Sent it back to distributor twice. The Sukhoi is ready--it needs that engine.

I had the .061 in a little trainer...a neat engine.

My .074 tended to lock up at the top before it was ran.
If I turned it slowly, it would lock and was a bear to push on through. If I flipped it, it somehow magically compressed through without a hitch.

I used an electric stater on both...it somehow builds a "bounce" in the compression, letting the piston go through the revolution.

I recommend asking Norvel (Sig) to credit you for the .061 and put the credit towards an .074. It idles much better than the .061.

The little Sukhoi has a tremendous appeal at the field, especially now that I mounted the painted cowl. Folks think it's cute but are sceptical about the .074. The wonder why I didn't put a .10 or .15 on it. However, they're amazed when they see it moving so fast and pulling straight up as well as it does. Not unlimited, but certainly authoritative.

Thanks for response. Sig sent me a new .061 engine and this one contained a new inser which talked about breaking the compression pinch. They said to remove the cylinder head then put the piston at BDC and add a few drops of oil and let it "cure" overnight. I tried to do this but could not get the head off. Some other guys on this site recommeded heating the cylinder head with propane torch or heat gun then start turning it over. Guess what--i did this and the engine has a very nice feel to it now. I ran it for 12 minutes and now must break it in some more.

You probably are right about using .074 but its too late now. I think the 6 inch prop won't work too well on the big Sukhoi nose section. But I went by the instructions in the kit--maybe later I'll try .074 or .10.

I used a 6x4 prop at first and it did great.
I now use a 7x3 for a little more vertical authority.

A 6x3 prop for the .061 will work fine.

Let us know how it flies...have any pics to post of the sukhoi?

I would post a picture if I knew how. I have a digital camera and can get the picture into my computer but don't see a "hook" for posting it on this site--probably missing it right in front of my nose.

When you're in the box typing your message, scroll down.
At the bottom left of the page is a box that says "attach file."
To the right of that is a button that says "browse".

Click the "browse" button and type in where your picture is:
C: drive, or desktop, or My Documents, etc...

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip on attaching pics. This is a test--it's a picture of Goldberg kit of Sukhoi--big plane.

I just got done breaking in a Norvel Big MIg .074 RC. I hope this helps someone else overcome the tightness of the brand new engine.
When I first got the thing I couldn't flip it past TDC without a fight. When I put it in the test stand, I used a heat gun on the cylinder to loosen the piston till the prop flipped easily. I then immediately attached the glow driver and hit it with the electric starter. It started immediately, so I let 6 ounces of fuel run through it. It is now loose and can be hand flipped and started without preheating.
I have no idea how anybody ever started one of these engines by hand without preheating it.
I made a high speed electric starter out of an old electric car motor and it has sufficient torgue to start the engine instantly now that it is broken in. It did not have enough torque to turn the motor when the motor was new and not preheated.
