This is my first glow engine I've had in a while but not my first Saito 82. I've been flying nothing but big gassers. Anyway, I have it on a little stick plane for our fun flys and took it out to the field, fired it up, sounds good, blowing a lot of smoke since it's new just for a few flights. I left the low end a little rich until I get some time on it and the top end a little rich as well. Full throttle sounds good on the ground and it's blowing a lot of smoke but when it's in the air it's not running full throttle and it polsates a little at full. I brought it down and richened up the high end and got the same result. I richened up the low end until it was idleing really rought and it still has the same problem. At this point the engine should be blowing a lot of smoke in the air. Any ideas?

I agree. But don't you think if it was vibrating and causing the fuel to foam that the engine would run the same on the ground as in the air (Pulsating, not full throttle, etc.) ? I'm not arguing about this I'm just asking a question.

How much time is on the engine? It will surge a bit until it is broken in and leaned out properly. My saito also spits alot of fuel out of the carb when mounted upright making hard to dial in. It is now inverted in a GP Mustang and works very well.

The engine is new. Only about three 8 oz tanks of fuel through it. My last Saito 82 didn't have this issue and ran well from the get go.

You may have a valve that is sticking or getting sluggish? It could be a lifter sticking or a rocker binding also?

Try running it rich on the ground a little more?

I'm going to do just that but when I was at the field I kept opening up the high end thinking it was still running to lean. It's got me puzzled.

If the LS needle is too lean it makes the HS needle ineffective beyond a certain point, that can cause your symptoms also.

My .72 did that a lot if I was on the verge of being too lean. I would land and richen it up a little and continue flying.

Maybe it is running too rich. I would lean the idle needle 1/8 of a turn and see how it goes and then tune the main needle 300rpm below peak.

I just took a look at the engine and fuel tank location. The engine is upright so the carb is a little higher than the fuel tank. Could this maybe be leaning the engine out and causeing the problems ??? I just talked to a buddy and he said that a rough setting on the low end would be with the screw flush with the black housing. Anyone head of this?

Why dont you try tuning the engine in or just finish breaking it in on the ground? Keep messing with the needles and you'll keep confusing yourself. Do it right and be done with it.

Then you can check to see if your fuel tank height is going to affect you a great deal. BTW how high is it above the spraybar?

Zippi,
Hobbsy has a real good post in CLUB SAITO (#7204, IT IS VERY RECENT) about setting up a Saito.
With a plastic throttle arm the LS screw should be about 1mm below the surface of the arm to start. HS four turns out to start. One thing Hobbsy does not make quite clear: adjust the HS needle first and ONLY at wide-open throttle. Follow his instructions from there on out.
Saitos are not hard to set up, but it is much easier to do if the needles are adjusted in the proper order. You will find the LS may need quite a bit of leaning to get things just right.
You may want to check and make certain that you don't have a air leak in the fuel system somewhere. I set up an .82 on a test stand a few days ago and it was acting similarly to the way you describe yours as behaving. There was a little rip in the pick-up tube right where the flexible hose fits over the brass tube in the tank stopper. It was not immediately apparent. Replacing the hose made all the difference in the world; the engine became very easy to tune and was running perfectly after about 24 ounces of fuel burn.
Good luck with your .82
