marvs777 -> Homemade Fuel for Savage X (HELP) (5/20/2007 1:51:15 PM)

Guys,

20% Castor Oil
80% Methanol

Will this fuel work for my HPI Savage k4.6 and F4.1 Engines?

Thank in advance guys!

In a word...yes :).
This is the same fuel my son uses in his Mach 28. It was run in using it, went racing with it and did quite well. We raised the compression to suit and now it has the same performance as the other Mach 28's using 25% nitro. About 20 hours of running so far and not a sign of any wear except the pull start cord :).

I went to a local chemical supplier. Apparently, there are two types of methanol, AR or Experimental which is 99.5% methanol, and Technical Methanol which is 90%. The 99.5% methanol costs around 17.39USD per liter while the 90% is only 4.34USD per liter. Is it okay if I use the 90% methanol? If I use the 99.5% then it will be more expensive than the fuels being sold in LHS. The castor oil costs around 9USD per liter.

You'll need the 99.5% methanol but go check that price again because that grade should be around $1USD per litre going by the price here in Australia which is $1.20 Aus per litre. Try a speed shop or Go-kart shop because chemical suppliers tend to be a bit pricey. Another place to try are fuel depots for companies like Shell or BP who both sell methanol. The price for the castor sounds about right.

Can I mix my homebrew fuel(methanol+castor oil) with commercially sold fuel(methanol+nitromethane+synthetic oil)

Thanks

downunder -> RE: Homemade Fuel for Savage X (HELP) (6/3/2007 1:00:23 AM)

Yes you can. The main affect it'll have is just to dilute down the nitro content but if you're mixing it with normal car fuel then it'll also give you a much better oil content.

marvs777 -> RE: Homemade Fuel for Savage X (HELP) (6/3/2007 1:53:43 PM)

Guys I already mixed my fuel:

Homemade Fuel:
Methanol: 1000 mL (83%)
Castor Oil: 200 mL (17%)

+

Commercially Sold Nitro:
300 mL Torando Fuel with 25% nitromethane. (methanol: 66%, synthetic oil: 9%, nitromethane: 25%)

=

My Fuel:
Methanol: 80%
Oil (Castor + Synthetic): 15%
Nitromethane: 5%

So far so good. I already ran two tanks. I did not notice any power reduction. Engine did not overheat.

Is castor oil the only oil you can use? How about a blend of Marvel Mysery Oil and caster oil blend, I plan to use a stociometric blend of hydrogen and oxygen gas in the inlet of an engine as an experimental additive.

htrab -> RE: Homemade Fuel for Savage X (HELP) (5/31/2008 4:18:25 PM)

Is this fuel mix appropiate for a OS 0.21 VG engine? [:o]

Complete volume= 1 gallon=3785 ml

Oil Klotz KL-100= 473 ml=473/3785=12.5% oil

Klotz Nitro KL-600= 236 ml = 236/3785=6.2% nitro

Methanol = 3785-(473+236)= 3076 ml/3785= 81.3% Methanol

I am trying to optimize the amounts of the components since the Klotz products are expensive. Methanol was the least expensive at $9.00/gallon.

The price for the KL-100 was around $13.00/32 FLOZ and the KL-600 about $16.00/16 FLOZ

If I can use half of the Klotz products and the Meth gallon less the volumes of the oil and Nitro the price per gallon will be as follows:

$9.00 Meth+$6.50 KL-100+$8.00 KL-600 = $23.50. An aftermarket RC gas gallon costs around $35.00 so I will be saving $11.50/gallon.

Thanks for the help!!!!!!! [:)]

Over here we can buy Coolpower oils, either straight castor, straight synthetic, or Coolpower Pink 30% Castor / 70% Synthetic Oil Mix, so we can blend exactly the same as what the LHS sells, his stuff is purchased from a local blender.

I'm looking into it as well, but can't really purchase from New Zealand can I?! hehe

Yea but if its available in little ol NZ then it should be readily available in the US or a very similar product...

Morgan do sell their oils in the USA but there appears to be *very* little demand.. because (unlike here in NZ) the vast majority of people simply buy premixed fuel from their LHS.

A far better option than Morgans oil would be the Plus C oil from Cooper Fuels in the USA. It's a far better oil and we use it here (at 12% by volume) in all our engines. In almost two years we've never had a single lubrication-related failure or worn an engine out using fuel blended with this oil It's fantastic.
