I know that this topic has probably been covered but what is the best method for adding rivets and panel lines to an airplane. I want to do a warbird from a kit and make it look a little more authentic by having a dull finish with weathering, rivets and panel lines. I am not an expert builder, however I have done kits in the 28% range with good results. I am thinking of a Top Flight GE Corsair or P-47. I will not change the wing lines and fuse for perfect scale but I really want to do panel lines and rivets. The next project will probably be a Ziroli Corsair or Hellcat and then I will attempt for not only panel lines and rivets but scale lines as well.

Check out the "tutotials" section on rcscalebuilder.com. tons of good techniques.
Lots of great info here as well: http://www.tompierce.net/rcplanes/index.htm

Hey Tom panel lines are easy just get it ready for paint primed and blocked. After that just wipe the plane down with window cleaner to get rid of the dust and let the tape stick well. For GS use 1/32" chart tape provides the right look. Locate a 3D vue of the plane to show all the panel lines. Now just put down the tape then you can either spray primer or a automotive sealer. After the paint is dry peel the tape off and you will have all your panel lines. For flush rivots I use a soldering gun that the tip was ground to the correct size then drilled a small hole in the middle which then gives you a nice ring look. Now just let it heat up and you start burning rings in the paint. It is best to take a pencil and mark a line a line where you are putting the rivots. I just freehand the spacing it doesn't take long to get the feel for it. Just start on the bottom where it won't show to start. For raised rivots I use a syringe with a small needle that I cut off flat then fill the syringe with regular wood glue and start making little droplets of glue to mimick the rivots. Then when you are done you take a scotchbrite pad and scuff the plane and final paint. I get the chart tape from

Great post Warks; This is a tried and proven method and it's probably the easiest out there.

Maybe I am getting a little to crazy but have any of you guys added rivets or panel lines to an arf such as a Hangar 9 Hellcat or P51 Mustang? I think that rivets and panel lines add a lot to the look of a warbird.

Thanks,
Tom

I did this KMP B-25 ARF with a Sharpie, and then clearcoated with Polycrylic.

Howdy,

I think that if you buy an ARF you should just fly it. Why go to the trouble of panel lines and rivets with a Warbird that's not really true to scale anyway. Now if you build a kit and make it true scale with mods then by all means put them on. ARF's are to assemble and fly ,so have fun and fly.

Check my gallery for some ARFs that were done this way. Some time with a pen, pencil, and markers, add a lot of attention to them IN the air as well as on the ground! Fly the hell out of them since you don't have to build them! Paul

Terry, did you spray the clear Polycrylic? If so, did you thin it and what type of gun did you use?

Thanks

I used the aerosol Minwax PolyCrylic. It was the waterbased satin. Needs to dry for at least a couple of weeks if using with glow fuel.

Thanks a lot for the reply Terry. I only fly gassers. I'm currently building a 1/4 scale Waco YMF-5.
