I finally found a H9 Taylorcraft that is in excellent condition....I've been wanting one for quite a while. Only problem is it doesn't have any wing struts with it. Any of you guys happen to have some left from an aircraft that might have suffered from a re-kitting??? I understand they aren't functional, and that the original mounting was prone to failure....but I really like the way they look on the plane and feel that I can engineer a mounting system that will survive.

I would also be interested in any other components that might be available.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I made my owm out of airo tubing from my local hobbie store and I did not bother to much with installing the kit one's. From all reports they are functional the struts. They came up very good and they stay connect to the wing at all times when travelling to the field, the only mod is the underside of the plane wear you attatch the strut too. I also used JB weild to fuse the alluminum together then some fine grit sand paper to smooth the joint before sanding then painting it, very nice job once complete.

I will post some photo's tomorrow to give you some idea, it only took a couple of day's to complete.

Regards
Jason

The struts are indeed functional. Never fly without them!
I too have made my own from aero alum. I flatened the end of the alum in a vise for the wing end and inserted a piece of steel in the landing gear end. Both pieces were mocked up on the plane for best fit then welded together off the plane.

Jeff,

I looked to see if we might have an old set laying around somewhere here at Horizon (Hangar 9), but that model was discontinued so long ago, that I was unsuccessfuol at locating any old spare ones.

Just to clarify one thing on the Taylorcraft struts we included on our Hangar 9 model. These struts are not functional and are only used on our model to capture the look of the full scale. The wing is plenty strong enough to fly without them and was tested quite extensively without the struts attached. So fabricate the struts as you see fit to achieve the desired look that you are looking for and you will be just fine. Be sure to glue the wing spar joiner with a fair amount of epoxy.

The t-craft h-9 with ys 140 on board is one of my favorite planes to fly but i am glad to hear the struts are not functional because due to vibration i keep breaking off the struts end pieces that tie down to the fuse. Thanks for the info.

Hello Bill,
Just thought that I might just show you some of the photo's that relate to the manufactured strutt's for the Taylorcraft. The process was very easy and only took 2 or 3 days to complete and came up very nice, its also good to get some feed back from the peaple that test it like your self.

Cheers

I have a Hanger 9 Taylorcraft in like new condition. I have about 15 flights on it. It has an RCS-180 w/Pitts muffler, also new with 15 flights. It has a 3300mah ignition and a 3300mah receiver batteries and all high quality Futaba digital servos. The struts are in the box and never used. And no, they are not functional struts on this airplane.

I also have, NIB a spare cowl, windshield and side windows.

If anyone really has to have it then make an offer, with or without the engine, servos or batteries.

Well I have 2 just got one of the last one's in stock from my local hobby store as the manufacturer has gone out of business,
Minicraft hobbies.
I have installed a os 200 and swinging a 18 by 10 prop, and it flys great, there is another supplier but I will have to do some searching. Here are a few photo's also.

Hi Jason,

I have a H9 taylorcraft that I am fixing up, had a small nose in, broke the firewall and windshield, not much else fortunately (cowling in great shape!!) But I will have trouble with the windshield, you or your local shop wouldn't have a spare, or be able to pull one off the existing windshield?

Cheers
Steve (Melb)

If anyone is interested I have a like new airplane, plus, I have a spare windshield, side windows and a new cowl. I planned ahead but I never flew the airplane much. I prefer the more scale stick built airplanes and this one just got me over the hump til I could finish my Lanier Taylorcraft.

Glad to see a Hanger-9 Taylorcraft thread is still alive after about 8-9 years. Too bad they quit making it about 5 years ago.

I put mine together about 7-8 years ago.........still flying it ! Powered with a Saito 1.8 using an ElectroDynamics on-board glow system.

After making numerous phone calls, I was fortunate to get in touch with Harold Hanson (Harold's real Taylorcraft was used by Hanger-9 as a model). Harold shot me a ton of pictures of his real Taylorcraft and then turned them into 10x8 glossies. He then mailed them to me along with documetation. He also gave me the name and phone number of the fellah that built his Taylorcraft.

Using the pictures and information from both Harold and the builder, I was able to fabricate about 100 small scale parts. These included a complete roll cage, detailed instrument panel, pitot tube, carb heat tube, gas cap and main landing gear springs.

One of the things that made Harold upset was the fact that Hanger-9 did not include the 1 degree of anihedral (opposite of dihedral)on the wing. This was also added to my model.

Putting the Taylorcraft together using Harold's help, made this my most gratifying model.

Joe M.

Hi Jason,

I fly with the VARMS club, predominately gliders, but the taylorcraft will ultimately be my tug trainer. Whereabouts in melb for work?

If you find anything out regarding windshield that will be great.

Cheers
Steve
