Okay ... First of all - Thank you Rusty for the kind words. Had you not mentioned my name I wouldn't have known you were talking about me!

The Brio was painted with House of Kolors system paints. Very cool to work with, extremely fast drying BUT: There are 50 things I could show you that I mucked up. Am I proud of that plane? In some ways yes, but others. no. The mistakes or booboos that happened are there. I wanted to get that thing in the air. I'm happy with it, but it is no where near the level of Mike's Black Magic or Bryan's Shinden (or all the other planes I've seen of his ...) or dozens of other guys planes. But I did it and I enjoyed doing it and I've always wanted to bring a little of the custom paint world into pattern. Other than flying, airbrushing is one of my favorite things to do. (All right, settle down ... there's a whole bunch of other stuff in between ... ) Anyway, it's a 5 footer. I learned a lot and the next one will be better, plus I was pressed for time. The brain thing is actually called a "Blowout". You see, I was trying to learn to fly the F-07 pattern and my brain exploded ... There will be more vinyl graphics on it shortly.

For the record: When Rusty told me he wanted to put it out here I DID NOT want him to do it. My fiance convinced me I should allow him to, so I gave him the green light. I didn't want it to look like I was "advertising", I'm not.

Now that I've cleared my good name ... I like what Jason said about he's doing this and that to his plane and he'll be proud of it. That's great. I think that's one of the cooler parts of this hobby - just getting out to the field or down in the shop and tackling something you've haven't done before whether it's a maneuver or building/painting technique.

As far as the contest goes ... let's not beat this thing to death and ruin it. It worked the first time and I think it will continue to work. I (maybe foolishly) have faith in people, to do the right thing. I think we can all recognize a true builder when we see one. It's the technique and attention to detail that sets them apart.

Sincerely,

Mike Dorna - Team YS Parts and Service (Field Rep)

Hey Mike, never fear...we are NOT going to ruin this thing! To many of us, the very idea of this prize is one of the cooler things to be introduced in a while, and I applaud Rusty for doing it.

The idea here is simply to clarify some things so we can see how it works, and make a few decisions for next year. Rusty and I spoke a while and we do indeed see it the same way, but since it's very nature is pretty vague to begin with, it's challenging to put it into 1000 words or less.

So don't worry, it's not going to be ruined....on the contrary, it's about to get kicked up a few notches for next year

Your plane looks fantastic man!!! And that's what I love is the modeling side of this all, because when you put some extra effort into your plane, it sets it apart from the rest of the planes on the flightline. The subtlest things, even a well placed set of graphics can do wonders.

What Bryan Hebert does is just amazing. But I'm going to try to top him next year!!! I may not be able to, but I'm going to have a blast trying!

-Mike

FLY RC Magazine Concours d'Elegance

The awards are ready and "buzz" is building...

I am pleased to share a photo of the awards and the creator of the plaque, Steve Weaver, of the AMA Special Products Department. Steve gave me a tour Friday morning while I was at the NSRCA District 4/District 5 Shoot Out and I picked up the awards.

The photos show the awards and the production area at AMA.

FLY RC Magazine Concours d'Elegance

More modeling magic from the "Kid", Raiko Potter...

I just received a few photos of Raiko's personal entry for the 2007 Concours d'Elegance...the "Impact HQ". For those of you who are not familiar with Raiko's work, he may be the most creative "Bling Detailers" out there and is the Assistant Manager for the 2007 USA F3A Team. (What a guy to have on your Team if your model needs some adjusting...)

Raiko has added many subtle details using scoops, fittings, paint details, graphics...very impressive!

How the event works:

Each 2007 Pattern NATS pilot will receive a NATS packet. The packet will contain your judging assignment, flight schedule AND a schedule/description for the additional events including the "JR Future Champions Breakfast", the "Futaba Flight Achievement Award" and the "FLY RC Concours d'Elegance". Additionally, each packet will include (2) ballots for the "FLY RC Concours d'Elegance" Champion and Runner-up.

The Concours has no entry fee or paperwork and you are automatically entered. The ballots are to be turned to the Site 1, 3 and 4 Site Directors or directly to me by 7:00 PM the evening of the NSRCA Banquet (Thursday) The awards are presented at the evening NSRCA Banquet.

I encourage ALL competitors to bring your model/s to the NATS Pilot's Meeting held at 5:00 on Tuesday. Incidentally, the 2007 USA F3A Team Manager, Albert Glenn, will be hosting an "Ice Cream Social" beginning at 4:00 PM before the meeting serving sodas and ice cream. This will provide time to meet Albert, Raiko (purchase some Team goodies, special raffles) and display your model/s.

Raiko how did that picture get out
you were supposed to keep that thing under wraps
your going to scare away the Competition,,,
Mike
The rumer mill must be running strong
I just have to do some paint repairs that I would have done anyway
my Airplane is a year old and has been through a major crash
and 300 flights on the Dixie r/c field
which has a rough runway
we can`t overlook Deans new models and I`m sure Kenny L. will have a strong entry
However, now that I know there is a concourse ,,, look out for the Shinden Bipe next year
and,,,,,,,, Brett`s , new ride

FLY RC Magazine 2007 Concours d'Elegance

A special pattern subject you may see at the NATS...

The following photos represents another perspective...passion for a unique design or modeling subject. Noted Scale enthusiast, Dave Platt, also designed a Pattern model in the 70's called the "Duelist". This very well done model was flown in "Club Class" at Mike Dorna's Menomonee Falls, WI contest the first week of June, modeler is unknown.

This completes tonights edition of:

"As the Concours Turns"

Tune in tomorrow... will Mike recover his sanity and make a run for the cup (plaque).... will Bryan undermine his partners efforts and steal his secrets.... is there another modeler in the shadows, lurking, watching, waiting.... Is balsa the key to winning?? maybe a little Yin Yang Yo is required to sweep the voters off their feet...

Is Rako Determined to add more flair to his already gorgeous plane... Does Carter have something up his sleeve for a finishing touch?... Does a twin really belong in pattern according to the rules?

Tune in as we draw near to the Finally.. like sanding a one piece wing, so go the days of our lives.

Gentlemen,

Tim Becker is the man that built the Duelist - SCRATCH - from plans. He did a very nice job finishing it also. He got the vinyl graphics from a guy in the club that can do those AND he won Club Class event at my contest on June 2nd. He's also club treasurer. More to the point - the guy builds almost all his planes from plans. They all look very good and fly great. A modeler in the truest sense, which I think kind of applies to the contest here.

Regarding Raiko's plane .... like Mike said - edited for content! Man that's just incredible. Can't wait to see it in person.

I knew I should not have let Rusty post my Brio out here!
