Hello fellas. I'm doing some thinking out loud. Please challenge my assumptions.

Many authors(Jentz, Doyle, Restayn) have said that some of the 1 Kompanie Tigers of the 501st were painted in green. Actually oversprayed from RAL 7021 with some type of green color. The actual shade is also in dispute. However, there is no photopgraphic evidence of this. None, other then black and white photographs. Well, I did read that a Canadian tanker say he saw a tv show last year that showed some green tigers in North Afrika. We don't have that show here in the states.

The 1 Kompanie tanks were completed earlier then the 2 Kompanie even if their serial number was lower. The 2 kompanie tanks were painted in RAL 8020 Afrika Braun. These tanks had spare track links mounted on the glacis plate, even PZIII links in the middle. The 1 Kompanie had their spare track links mounted on the bottom of the rear plate. I have color photos of a destroyed 1 Kompanie tank that appears to be painted in RAL 8020.

So based on this and other information you fellow know, what do you think? Were there any "green" tigers?

That picture has been misidentified as being from Tunisia from time to time. The give aways are the chevrons on the tracks and single centered headlight.

What else?

The caption for that one was Rome, but since the panzers from Afrika evac'd to Italy it may give some clue. I have read that this series of books has some rare photos, I have the first one on order, the second is a little beyond my price limit:
Tigers

No Tigers made it out of Afrika except for the two captured by the Allies, 712 and 131. All those in German hands were either destroyed or scuttled.

Some of 504s Tiger's were diverted to Scicly, the 2 Kompanie. All but Tiger 222 were lost. 222 hopped on a barge and made it back to Italy only to break down and be lost in the Calabria Mountains.

The story of the "green tigers" is related to a shortage of paint which was then borrowed from the Italian air force (Regia Aeronautica), leading to a (possible) green version of some DAK tanks.

The one in my photo was definitely painted at a depot or factory because of the thoroughness of the paint, it covers everything. You wouldn't expect a tank being repainted in the field to have it wheels removed so the underside of the hull could be painted in camoflage. Like some speculate they would be oversprayed, the only thing they might tape over is the numbers so they wouldn't have to do them again. In the case of the 142 Tiger, it looks like they did just that. All the 1 Kompanie Tigers have white outline numbers and in the photos of 142, the area between the white outline is a different color then the paint outside the white outline suggesting they taped over the whole thing.

Some sources say the very first Tigers were painted in RLM 66 or RAL 7021 which is almost black. That would look right when one views photos of the first Tiger captured by the Russians, I think it was 111 with the storage boxes on both sides. My plan for my first of 3 DAK Tigers is to paint this one in RAL 7021 then overspray it with RAL 6003 or another green when the whole tank is completely re-assembled.

Tiger after that will be in RAL 8020 along with a PZIII and a Tiger belonging to 504th will be in RAL7028. That should cover the mix. A 1 Kompanie Tiger in green. A 2 Kompanie Tiger in Braun, and a 504 1 Kompanie Tiger in Dark Yellow
