Futaba Flight Achievement Award

Regarding Flight and Achievement...

The photo below shows pilot extraordinaire Mark Leseberg, landing my YS DZ 1.60 powered Oxai-Zeque in Phoenix in February (See RCU thread: Phoenix in February for more details). The short story, Mark kept the model upright and horizontal for at least 3 seconds... before the first of many lovely and powerful passes in every attitude except for upright.

The event sponsor is BARELY VISIBLE (oh you mean " Futaba "...) and I just feel that it is a very cool photo taken by Sam Johnson, the importer of the Oxai models in the USA that may inspire continued discussion of this fine NATS event on this RCU thread.

You are invited to share YOUR experiences of witnessing "Pattern Perfection" or other stories inspiring and championing fine performances!!

Futaba Flight Achievement Award

A flight achievement only possible because of friendship and a common goal...

In the early Spring of 2006, I traveled to Green Sea, SC for the an event that gave me the opportunity to see and experience what I call the "Pattern Brotherhood"...

Dave Guerin and I were in town for a precision aerobatic clinic and contest CD'd by Buff Miller. We arrived late Friday morning in my RV and trailer for practice. Shortly after we arrived, a bunch of pilots arrived in a "Toy Hauler" fifth wheel driven by Joey Hayes. The "Pattern Brotherhood" consisted of Joey Hayes, Terry Darr, Bill Mitchell and Ryan Smith. They unloaded a collection of interesting airplanes, canopy tent and a work table. The area was filled with activity with drilling, grinding, running of engines all afternoon and into the early evening. Around 6:30 or so I went into my rig for a while and came out and introduced myself to everyone and started my version of "20 questions"...I wanted to learn more about the "Outlaw" that had been the object of all of the activity that afternoon.

They made the mistake of offering me a steak for dinner (how could I refuse) all the while it is getting darker and later and finally about 10:30 or 11:00 (Ryan may be able to provide better details) the project was ready for the final touch of graphics.

The next morning (very early!) my neighbors were busy preparing for the maiden flight of the special project. The photos complete the story. The airplane flew well enough for Terry to fly it in F3A and more Saturday evening test flights were conducted with Bill at the controls (no photo of Bill flying, Terry is flying in the photo, Bill is the tall guy)...with the "Pattern Brotherhood" looking on.

Flight achievement...and much, much, more. I appreciated their hospitality, new friendships and an additional perspective of the world of toy airplanes.

Futaba Flight Achievement Award

Many of you have never visited the AMA flying site in Muncie. The Pattern NATS utilizes Site 4 for the Intermediate and Advanced classes, kind of a contest within a contest. Site 4 is a grass runway with lots of room for RV's of any dimension and is an excellent place to spend an evening discussing the days activities.

Site 3 has an "x" style asphalt runway, which tends to create confusion and lowers the confidence of all but the most experienced competitor due to the optical illusion of the runway layout. Site 1 is considered "show center" and is the home of the F3A Finals. Masters and F3A classes are divided in half and rotate between Site 1 and Site 3. The judges are rotated as well for equal exposure for a given day's schedule d(2) rounds. Masters finals is flown on Site 3 and the F3A finals are flown at Site 1. Site 1 has fewer optical illusion challenges, yet still adds additional anxiety to many pilots.

The " Futaba Flight Achievement Award " Champion will execute the most perfect flight at one of these AMA sites!

The photo is from the pits of Site 3 with the 2007 USA F3A Team "Promotional Department".

The airplane was finished at around 12:30-1:00 am, and after putting all that work in, poor Bill didn't even get to fly the first gallon of fuel through it.

In case any of you in pattern land remember the Phenom a couple years back, this airplane is the follow on to that. It's a great flying airplane.

Futaba Flight Achievement Award

The physical award has been completed and waiting to be given to the 2007 Champion. Many of you may have wondered where you can find model airplane award s that are reasonably priced, custom made just for you and of course, can be created in a timely manner.

I suggest you contact Steve Weaver, at the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) HQ Special Products Department, in Muncie for all your needs including plaques and apparel. Steve has been creating cool stuff for me for a few years and I keep coming back. Steve may be reached via the AMA website... or phone 765-287-1256 ext. 522
or stevew@modelaircraft.org

Here are a few photos of Steve and some of the award s for the 2007 Pattern NATS.

Just a reminder... the " Futaba Flight Achievement Award " will be announced in less than (16) days at the award s ceremony for the 2007 AMA Pattern NATS. The award will be given to the pilot who has the highest "raw" versus potential flight score flown (Masters and F3A Finals are not included) during a complete round. All Intermediate, Advanced, Masters and F3A pilots will be entered and there is no fee or paperwork required.

The photo shows my son Chip (4) after his first glow powered flight yesterday afternoon...yes somehow he is into Futaba

Futaba Flight Achievement Award

The 2007 Futaba Flight Achievement Award goes to...

Glen Watson with a 89.21% perfect score! The best individual flight, based on combined single flight score, versus the potential maximum score at the 2007 NATS. Glen is a quiet giant in the world of precision aerobatics and also took home First Place in Masters Class.

Way to go Glen.
I know you don't like much fanfare, but you are a great pilot and I am really proud to see that you nearly acheived perfection and earned a win at the Nats. You deserve it.

Basic Set up

Aircraft: ZN Line Twister
Power: YS 160 DZ
Mount: Hyde Type A, Central Hobbies nose ring
Radio: Futaba 14MZ Tx, G3 R5014 Rx
Servos: Ailerons FUT 9154
Elevators FUT 9650 (2, stab mounted)
Rudder FUT 9155
Throttle FUT 9650
Exhaust: NMP header & brace, Hatori 698 muffled pipe, Karl Mueller exhaust minimizer
Prop: APC 15x11 4-blade
Fuel: Morgan’s CoolPower 30% heli blend
Glo Plug: YS
Rx battery:Radical RC NiMh 2150 6v

Over the last 3+ years I have flown this general equipment configuration in different airframes a Temptation, Partner and Twister. This equipment configuration has proven to yield consistently high performance, longevity, low in maintenance and is readily available from various resellers. These are attributes I seek in competition equipment.

Notables regarding equipment selection…

APC 15x11 4-blade – best speed control prop on a 160 DZ I have ever used, takes some time getting use to it’s characteristics although well worth the effort. Acceleration/deceleration is less abrupt vs. 2-blade prop.

Mueller exhaust minimizer – Doesn’t really work as hoped minimizing the amount of smoke however the side benefits of placing the exhaust trail in cleaner air flow pays dividends as well as noise reduction. Also is a great conversation piece.

Futaba 14MZ – The ultimate RC investment, yes the difference between 1024 vs 2048 resolution is detectable. Combine the 2048 advantage with the flexible programming abilities of the 14MZ and you have hands down the most powerful RC radio on the market by far.

Morgan’s CoolPower 30% heli blend – I have used CoolPower in YS engines since 1999. CoolPower’s heli blend in my YS 160 DZ’s has consistently provided peak, reliable, low maintenance performance just what a competitor seeks in engine performance.

YS 160 DZ -- No words necessary.

How do I prepare

Practice, practice, practice is the cliché I use to define how I prepare. I am not blessed with the natural talent as others in our sport. However I am student of all aspects of the sport of pattern continually learning from past experience and from others. I’ve been very fortunate to live in an area of the country which has a deep resource pool of pattern enthusiast.

Like others I have a demanding personal life and professional career which limits when and how much I can practice. A typical quality practice session for me consists on 3-5 flights depending upon available time and the ability to stay focused. It’s important that I get the most out of the time spent when practicing. I set goals for practice sessions based on what was not working the last session. Setting goals is vital.

My 2007 Nats traveling companion/practice buddy summed it up the best for me. He said and I quote ”I left nothing to chance”. Placing first in Masters and winning the Futaba Flight Achievement award is an honor I do not take lightly. It’s a result of many hours spent preparing to be the best I could be on any given day.

Let me be yet another in a long line to congratulate you on this award , Glen. I remember when I was 15 or 16 and Glen first came on the pattern scene, my dad and I were astounded by the geometry and gracefulness of his maneuvers... and back then I think he was flying a ballistic LA-1! I hope to see you at the LARKS contest, or if not there, you just gotta come to the Cajun Nats.

Conradulations Glen! It was nice to finally meet you and spend a few minutes chatting. I didn't want to bother you much as you were preparing for a flight, but I was very impressed with your flying and your equipment. Very nicely done!

I really like the diffuser. For all of the reasons you mention. I may have to get me one of those and play with it. One of my goals for next year is to see how quiet I gan get my new planes. I think if it just drops a decibel, I'm all for it. And I like the exhaust trail being in cleaner air. Especially in certain rolling manuevers, the smoke trail is cleaner. Watching carefully you can see that on another plane with a straight exhaut outlet, during a roll the trail does something different than the track of the plane. This can leave a subconscious question in the judge's mind. the diffuser has a much cleaner "spiral" to it. hey, we need every advantage we can get vs electrics!

"Every aspect of the game".....you got that right!!!!!!!

Please tell us masters guys you're moving to FAI? LOLOL

-Mike

Thanks Mike, nice meeting you too...

During a practice session a couple years back one of my local club members who watches me from time-to-time commented on how the exhaust trail spiraled when rolling and when pulling radii. I attached a long extension to my exhaust stinger which had an immediate positive impact however the trail was still very concentrated. The Mueller diffuser does help dispersed the trail into a wider, finer pattern which is only visible on clear sky type days like we had during the finals.

I’ve only applied the diffuser to the old style long Hatori mufflers like the 698. The current trend is the short Hatori mufflers. I have not yet tried one. I would be interested to know the effects of the short style with a Mueller diffuser. Having the exhaust exit closer to the prop may help break up exhaust more. My engine test bed aircraft uses the YS sport type muffler which I point towards the prop. This really fans and breaks up the exhaust trail into a fine mist however it sure makes a weird sound and deposits oil all over the airframe.
