very new and dont understand. I'm getting two 8cell 9.6v 800mah nimh battery packs for the crazy max which is the recommended battery.. My question is when I upgrade planes and go w/ new motor/esc combination ,. how do i know if i could still use the battery packs. If its the same or close to weight of the suggest pack or same Voltage or same capacity? any help or insight would be greatly apreciated
thanks,
Brad

Battery choice is one of the most complex areas in electrics. Generally it's best to go with what's recommended until you find your way.

All the factors you suggest have to be right:
Too heavy - bad for flight
Too light - can be difficult to balance and anyway the capacity will be low
Voltage too high - bad for the motor
Voltage too low - won't fly unless you change motor/prop/gearing
Lower capacity - short flights

etc.

Yes, all true. AND the physical arrangement of the cells determines if the pack will fit into the model. Then there are the issues surrounding Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-Ion, Li-Poly, etc. There is lots of fun ahead for you!

Brad,

Basically those packs you are getting are a nice match for a Speed 300 motor plane (and, at a pinch, maybe a Speed 400 if it's not sucking too many amps). Speed 300 tend to be used geared (in things like the Wattage or GWS gearboxes) and are generally used in planes with a span of about 28-34" and a weight of about 10-20oz.

These are all generalisations but you should find the packs usable in planes around that spec (i.e. something else that is about the same size and weight as a Crazy Max).

After you get good on a Crazy max the Mountain Models Switchback makes a nice follow on plane and those packs should be usable in it.
