Hey I am ready to do some homebrewing on fuel and I downloaded Australia Air's Home Brew Buddy but it is not for Windows XP. I can get the nitro methane and methanol and the oils and I am looking at mixing it properly and quickly. Thanks

You don't need software to home-brew fuel, it's dead easy math.

Want 4 litres of 10% nitro and 18% oil?

Each litre will be (100mL) 10% nitro, (180mL) 18% oil and the balance (720mL) 72% will be methanol.

To make two litres, just double those numbers.

To make four litres, multiply them by four so you get:

100mL x 4 = 400mL of Nitro
180mL x 4 = 720mL of oil
720mL x 4 = 2.88 litres of methanol.

The metric system makes it dead easy!

A quick way (if you're always mixing the same brew) is to mark your mixing containers with levels for oil, nitro and methanol

Make sure you always add the ingredients in the same order and top up to the appropriate level with each. The result is perfectly proportioned ingredients and great fuel made in just a minute or so.

Where in the Heck is good place to get the Methanol and what would be a reasonable price to expect to pay? I found a Speed shop that has 55 gal drums for 175.00. Is there any other way to buy it? I saw another place that wanted like 60.00 for 5 gals...

I don't know what things are like in America but in Australia methanol is about the same price as petrol, maybe a little cheaper. By my calculations your 5 gallons would cost about US$20.

Here you can download a simple Excel spreadsheet (28 kB) that will perform the calculations:

Johnny:

See if you can find a drag strip in your area, many times they will sell methanol. A couple of months ago I paid around $3.00 a gallon for methanol from my local drag strip. I would not by the large drum unless you are going to repackage it into smaller jugs. Opening the barrel and not using it all is an invitation to having it absorb water. The five gallon can is way overpriced at 60.00. If you find a dragstrip I would strongly suggest you invest in a race fuel jug. I paid around 30.00 for mine (5 gallon container) and it has O ring seals on it to keep moisture out. You local auto parts store can probably get them for you, perhaps on e by as well.

I mix up one gallon at a time. I ordered my oil from Morgan's, the maker of Cool Power, Omega etc. When I ordered a case of oil this spring it was $25.00 a gallon, shipping included. My total cost per gallon is around $7.00. I don't run any nitro and haven't had the need to in the types of engines that I run. Phone no for Morgan's is 1-800-633-7556. I mix 10 oz of the cool power green oil, 10 oz of the Omega mix oil and 6 oz of straight castor oil to make one gallon of fuel. I put the oil in an empty one gallon plastic fueul jug and then add methanol until it gets full. This mix comes out to be a little bit more that 20% oil content per gallon.

This mix has worked well for me so far. Please everyone no flames about my choice of oil, I run what works for me, you run what works for you. This was the cheapest blend for me. Many of the problems people experience are from fingers that like to lean the needles too much and then blame the fuel. Keep the needles set on the rich side and you should not have problems and engines that last a long time.

We have 2 race tracks nearby. I'm about 10 minutes from St.Louis. Thanks for the tips. Never thought about asking at the Track. I called the one track and they'll sell me 5 gals if I bring my own containers. I know they run Methanol in their "Sprint" cars. "World of Outlaw" type cars but I don't know how long their methanol sits around. Gateway International Raceway is just right down the road too but I haven't called them yet. I run small stuff.... but I do have a couple 4 strokes I'm getting ready to use. I was reading they like the Nitro?
The fuel Jugs sound like a really good idea. I know that methanol is pretty volatile with a low flash point too. Besides being hydroscopic.

It doesn't sit around long in a car racing environment. They go through a bunch of it in a short time.

Here's a 5 gallon fuel jug for 17 bucks; free shipping:

Johnny: It sounds like you are set then with two tracks nearby. If you are running four strokes, you're right, they probably will require nitro. I have however run 0 percent in my os 52, the only noticeable difference was the high speed needle did not seem as responsive to adjustment as it did with nitro. You would lean and if would just die. If you richened it up a couple of clicks it was fine. It's a matter of the engine and experimenting. I did not tach the engine rpm on it vs. what it did with straight 10%. When I get around to it I will. The majority of what I run are two strokes, Webras, Rossi and Enya which either don't reqiure nitro or up to 5%. They have handled my mix pretty well. I even ran it in a os fx 46 this past weekend, good idle and good power. If you have to start adding nitro it may actually be cheaper just to buy off the shelf fuel. Nitro is expensive.

The jug is similar to what I have. You may also want to get a ratio rite mixing cup from your local dirt bike shop. It had measurements all over the place to tell you mixing ratios, ounces etc. Its cheap, works well and will last a lifetime. I think 5 gallons of methanol will make a little over 6 gallons of mixed fuel ( 128 oz-26oz oil=102 oz of methnol required for a full gallon of premixed fuel).
