I have a new 977 charging system (which is sweet) and just purchased two 7 cell 3700 nimh packs. I set the peak detection to 35mV (5mV per cell), charge rate at 4A, number of cells to 7 and hit start charge, then switched the display to mAh just to see what kind of capacity its charging too. Without fail, even from completely discharged the meter stops at around 1200mAh. Am I missing something--shouldn't my charge be in the 3000's at least based on the battery or are there other factors that influence the mAh readings while its charging?

Here is what I've noticed. Brand new batteries, especially NiMHs, tend to false peak a lot. I hesitate to use the term, but they sort of have to be "broken in". Charge the batteries using the settings you mentioned, if the charger shuts off go to the "mah" screen and see where it stopped. Now, if you have 3700 mah batteries and it stopped at 1200 mah you know they're not charged. Keep a running total on a piece of paper, write down the 1200 mah that the battery just took, and then start the charge again. When it stops again, write that number down and add it to the first. Keep doing this until you get close to the capacity of the battery. A really good indication of whether the battery is fully charged is the heat in the battery, so make sure you start with a battery that's room temperature. After each time it stops, grab the battery to see if it's warm or not. If it's still about room temperature then it's not fully charged. After the battery is fully charged run it. It should take a full charge on one shot after that. Also, after the first charge you can charge these batteries at 5 amps without that much detriment to the battery. At 4 amps it should take about 55 minutes to charge, at 5 amps about 45 minutes.

What size Tamiya clips do you need for the adaptor. Small or Large. I went to cheapbatterypacks.com to make a dean and tamiya adaptor and can't find the size in the manual. Oh I guess I should have told you I don't have the charger yet. Thanks for the Help guys.

You would need the large Tamiya style plug.

You should probably do a few form charges.

Charge at .5A, 5000mAh, 35mV

It will take just about 10-11 hours to charge. Basically you are turning the peak charger into a slow charger and will max out at 5000mAh. Do that twice and you will see better full charges. This allows the charger to slowly peak each cell without damaging the pack.
