I've got a Zenoah G62, it fire up and ran the first time trying but hasn't ran since. It has sputtered and puffed alot but not ran, changed out the plug a couple of times and still the same result. I am new to gassers but have flown nitros for many years, all my experience is in 2 stroke nitro. It has mag ignition but I did get it started once, but since it has been a pain. Any ideas on what to try?

It's a little hard to tell from what you are posting, but assuming you have good spark, the problem has to be fuel delivery.

Does the engine have a spring starter? Are you getting it good and "wet" before you try to start it? I assume you have a on/off switch wired to it. Are you sure that is in good order? Is the fuel tank vented. Do you have the prop mounted in the correct relation to the shaft (the directions with the engine will explain that), but the prop should be at 90 deg. to the cutouts on the back plate. The G-62 is usually a very easy engine to get started unless you are trying to start it without a spring starter, then, it can be very difficult unless you can really "hit" it.

A little more detail about the way you try start the engine may help.

zax2000,

Hold your thumb over the carb and rock the prop back and forth from 11:00 to 1:00 and that will activate the pump to prime the carb until your thumb is nice and wet. You have to really flip the prop hard and fast and like Bish Wheeler said, "The prop should be at 90 deg. to the cutouts on the back plate". The prop has to be passing the mag at a certain speed to create a good spark. I've watched a couple of guys at the field fire theirs up and once you learn how it's no problem. Mine is on EI and so much easier. Choke on, flip til it pops, choke off flip til it starts.

Good, new kill switch, turn it over by hand (no spring starter), tank is vented .... I put full choke and flip until it sputters, then "off" the choke and flip and she sputters alot for a few flips but never starts. Needles are set to factory recom'd settings, engine is in overall good shape, it is getting fire (hence the sputtering and puffs of smoke out of the exhaust), running 1:32 unleaded gas, and it's definately getting fuel, I have the cowl off and can see it entering the carb.

Oh, and I defineately "throwing" the prop (not just little flips), I had to come in tonight and ice and heat my shoulder since I aggravated my old sports injury. At this point I'd like to get it running to get a couple of flights in but will be looking towards a spring starter at a minimum since I know my shoulder won't hold up to any "hard starting" situations in the future. Especially since I am addicted to the idea of going all gas and phasing out my nitros.

I got some dirt in my needles once and it made it very hard to start/run. You might try taking the needles out and blowing some air in the holes where the needles were. Compressed air is good if not use a tygon hose long enough to blow on one end. My crud was just a speck, if you got more dirt you might need to pull the filter/screen off of the carb.

rdb127 has a very good point. If it's getting fuel and spark then it may be a dirty filter or in the carb itself. Make sure your ground is good.

I have six G-62's, and every one of them is equipped with a C&H Jump start. Choke until wet - one flip, and they are running. No need to lay into it - just flip at any speed. You need to spend a little money and get yourself a jump start. Forget about buying a spring starter - it just adds weight. The jump start is by far the best way to go.

My guess, you have a dirty carb. Check the screen.

Two things come to mind 1 is the fuel fresh and not some of last years lawnmower fuel? 2 you said the engine over all is in good shape i assume it is a used one I had one that behaved like yours on one of my take offs i ticked the prop on the ground and the result was i sheared the woodruff key that locks the flywheel to the crank shaft . the result was that the flywheel shifted and changed the timing it was hard to get it to run till i figured out the problem A dirty carb will also act this way

The gas was bought in late April, mixed it with Zenoah oil as soon as I got it. From what I've read I am switching to redline after this quart but I might just use the rest in my weedeater and switch after this gallon. I will check the flywheel, clean the carb (already looks nice and shiny but will blow it out with air), and I think I will get a C&H jump start, I really don't want to spend the $150 or so to convert it to electric ignition just to make it easier to start since I don't necessarily need a lighter engine and it's powerful enough as it sits for this bird. Where's the best place to get a jump start?

or you can go to c & h ignition

another thing you could do is a electric starter, sulivan model 4 using 24 volts spins them over very well
