Hello all,

I have a friend with a +/- 30 year old fuse for a banshee that he painted when he built it. He wants to repaint it and hasn't had any luck with removing the old paint. He has tried store bought paint strippers but they don't seem to work. I told him to break out the wet dry sandpaper and have at it (LOL). Does anyone have any idea's on an easy way to remove the old paint? I'm not sure what it was painted with originally, but I can find out.

Thanks

Fly safe and have fun!!
David

I've heard, but never tried, that Easy Off Oven Cleaner works well. Spray it on let it sit for a couple hours and then scrape off. If you try it let us now how it works.

Sanding will probably work the best and surest.

Here is one of my old Banshee's from the early 70s sporting a rear rotor Ross 61 and Rhom Air Retracts

I've done the wet sanding route, and it is time consuming, but it does work. I'm not aware of a chemical stripper that will remove the paint, and not hurt the glasswork, if there is one, I'd love to hear about it. I have a plane that I would like to strip and repaint myself.

Dave,

Se if you can get this product from NAPA stores. #6804 Fiberglass Paint Stripper made by "AUTOMOTIVE SPECIALTY' or "AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHING PRODUCTS". I cannot get it it Canada. I tried to buy some from an NAPA store inb the US but they would have to order it for me, which was no good as I would not be around for long.

Ed,

I can't locate it on Napa's website, but I have sent them an email to see if they can still get it.

I have a 2000' vintage Miss Ashley that could use a repaint after 2 midairs, and being hit on the ground!

Dave, you should know repainting an "experienced" pylon racer is the kiss of death. If it survived two mid-airs as is, I'd be inclined to leave it...LOL

Good point Gary, but the rudder hinge line is about worn out and needs to be stiffened up also. Here is the response from NapaOnline:

Thank you for visiting NAPAonline.com. Unfortunately, the fiberglass
paint
stripper that you are searching for is not currently available at
NAPAonline. However, you may be able to get assistance in locating
this
item at your local NAPA auto parts store. Please feel free to use the
store locator at our website or call 1-800-LET-NAPA (1-800-538-6272) to
find the NAPA auto parts store nearest you.

Again, thank you for visiting NAPAonline.com
Sincerely,

Customer Support
Have a great day!

I don't see the use of stripping all the paint off I always just wet sand the cowl get it smooth and then spray the primer then shoot some color and maybe even a clear coat.

It depends whether or not you are weight conscious.

I would say 95% of the planes you see at the field are over powered anyway so i don't see why someone would need to waste time getting all the paint off of a cowl. If weight is that critical then its probably underpowered.

If it was just the cowl, I could see your point, but this is the whole fuse.

Try to submerge in a big container with brake fluid. It work for me before. Just let it soak for while them brush it of with a hard brush similar to a kitchen brush. It takes time but works, at the end do the final sanding, you can strain the fluid put it back in the bottles and use again not for your car but to strip old paint again or just recycle it.

PS: (try on a small piece first like a cowling)

just my 0.02
