I want to build a Tempest in the 80" range. Has anyone any experiance with Sepp Uiberlacher's plans? How about any other kits, plans etc.? Vailly Aviation has a nice looking 96"er but its a one piece wing and I dont have an extended van to hall it around in. Any info would be appreiciated. Thanks

IMP(Innovative Model Products) made a Tempest in the 80" range. I have one I havent started yet. Fiberglass fus and foam core wings. Century Jet makes the retracts.

I heard IMP went out of business a couple of years ago but then again I just heard they are still around. Heritage makes a smaller one!

The Tempest and Typhoon were both done by Bryan Taylor. They may be too small for you at about 70 inch span and 60-90 power. Plans and parts still available.

A fellow named Vito Tomeo produced plans and parts for an 80" Tempest some years back, and I believe Bob Holman has plans and parts for a blow up of the Brian Taylor design at 80".

My best friend has just completed an 80" Tempest for competition using both sets of plans and the Bentley 3-views. Some things were closer to scale on one design vs the other. I have a doggy Tomeo Tempest which needs a rebuild.

I would think the Uberlacher 83" Tempest would be a very good design to work from. Of course, I think any of them are gorgeous!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Tom

Tom, I never did build it but I did have the Uiberlacher plans for the Tempest and they were very well drawn. Sepp is a desciple of Brian Taylor and his plans are engineered very similarly. I did think that it was designed a bit light, for example 1/16 sheeting on the wings if I remember correctly, but that could be replaced with 3/32 with no design changes required. All in all I thought the plans were some of the nicest I had seen but a Tempest is just not on my list at the moment so I passed them on to somebody else. I still have Sepp's Spitfire plans though. The big hang up with the Tempest is the scale gear but I think Unitracts has them available for Sepp's airplane. Best of luck, Chad Veich.

You're correct, Chad, Unitracts makes a set of retracts including the parallel strut arrangement used on both Tempests and Sea Furies. I have a set for my Tomeo Tempest and my friend has a set in his airplane. Although the operation is not strictly scale it is possible to add bits to reproduce the full scale look, if not the action.

I have seen photos of the gear for Roy Vallaincourt's 96" Tempest and they appear to copy both the function and the look of the original.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks for the info Tom. I think Sepp used to offer the drawings for the scale gear he used in his prototype also but I have no idea if they are available any longer. I have a pic of a Tempest built from the enlarged Taylor plan that Bob Holman offers and it is quite nice and a good flyer. I don't think Bob has a canopy or cowl for it though. One question, is the Tempest gear pretty much identical to the Sea Fury? I have a Sea Fury project in mind that needs gear. Regards, Chad.

Chad, as far as know the Sea Fury and the Tempest share a lot of systems including the landing gear which uses the double strut and 100ş retraction angle. I purchased Sepp's plans about a year ago from Unitracts and they have available both sets of retracts: the accurate scale and the sport scale. Also avalilable are cowl, canopy, spinner and glass fuse.
This was an awesome machine and one of the fastest piston powered airplane ever built I'm surprised not many people build it.
I can't wait to start this project but of course there are others waiting (Including the Hornet!)
Regards,
JG

The best place to find Hawker Tempest information is the “Hawker Tempest Web Page”.

Tons of information about the original and also a complete listing of all RC kits, and designs. Well worth checking out!

Best regards
Thomas

Excellent suggestion, Thomas B. The Hawker Tempest site you identified is outstanding. I have it book marked in my favorites. There's especially good data on the chronology of the camouflage schemes for the airplane. Also good biographical data on pilots and combat stories.

What a site! I could not believe the amount of info and real life stories that's available. Not to mention the footage of the Tempest chasing the V1 bomb!
Makes me wanna start the project right away!

Flybaby: Thanks for the offer but I have Sepp Ubirlacher plans that I'd like to build. Cowl, canopy and scale retracts are available from Unitracts International. By the way, what retracts do you have for your Tempest?? Would like to see photos too.
