K&B made some fine engines!

The old 4011 was/is still a good, solid motor.

I absolutely love the .20/.28/.65 sportsters. Say what you want, but they are jewels. Those who have problems with them would have a problem with any motor, so you can't blame K&B.

Sad that they've sorta slipped into the background these days...

Attention K&B haters...

Please box up your unwanted K&B engines and contact me via PM to send them to me for free. I will happily "relieve" you of these evil little things.

I am partial to Sportsters (.20/.28/.65).

Attention please --
If anyone has a very good or new Sporster 20- or other small sportster - for sale or give away - please let me know - via E mail
I was given three of em, years back by a hobby shop owner , who said the customers cold not make em run .
The real problem? the customers di not know how to run engines -or understand what they did wrong.
any way -- I would like another small sporster - I love em-- warts and all - they never rust - (they can't!), they
are extremely quiet in operation with the stock muffler and they will swing big props easily ( I run 11x4 props on 30% nitro AND oil).
Breakin and setup do take some thought - so what ?
I still have a 150 that I got from Don Weitz, just before the operations folded in Arizona -
This was a great engine- once the oversized bar stock piston was turned down--and three head shims and a ST 3250 carb was adapted.
It turns a 18x8 APC at 9300 -on a small VTech can.
super good throttle transition and exceeded my best 2300 Tigres by 200 rpm.
I oiled it up and boxed it as when the bar stock piston is gone - that is the end of it - so I just put it in my "collection " while it is still good.
I first saw K&B engines when I wanted a Stuntwagon - in 1950.
A Stuntwagon and a slant plug K&B was just about the best model setup I had ever seen back then -
I have had quite a few of the engine models they made over the years -including some really great racing engines but the Sportster was one of the best ideas - tho maybe not the best result- of them all.

about 15 years ago a friend gave me an old beat up .61 with a super tigre carb and "blow through" muffler, but instead of K&B it had "VECO" written on the case. even with the cracked rod it ran real good for about 10 years until too much dust took it's toll on the piston/cylinder. i'm pretty sure the newer parts would fit and maybe someday i'll rebuild it.

sometimes even really old designs can do just as good as the new stuff.

There are so many guys in my area that bought the $49.00 MECOA .46 (BB & TN carb) and had great luck with them that I bought one and put a Davis Diesel head on it with a 12x8 prop. My question is; when is this crappy motor going to fall apart?

Hello; I bought a bow of K and B 4011's, 2 complete and one in pieces, I ran them on one of four mid star 40's I built, they ran well for the whole year. I sold the lot to Marty for $100. He took them and used those engiienes in one or another plane for 4 years without a problem. The ones I had were great, they ran trouble free all that time. I offered to buy them back from marty but no way.
I've seen lots of sportsters at our field too, they seem to work okay a little quieter.

I had a .20 sportster when I was a kid and although heavy and cheap looking it ran perfectly with lots of power right out of the box. Never a complaint or problem. Later in life I got a K&B .61 with the perry carb and pump on the back. Never did run worth a crap. The local expert said the best thing to help it was to clean it all up, put it in the street and run over it a few times with a truck. I still have that stupid thing somewhere...

A K & B Infant Torpedo was my first glow engine in the late 40's or early 50's. Have gone through time probably owning 50 t0 60 K & B 's. Thought they all were good just that some were better than others . The ones that stand out were the .19 U/C , .049 , Green head .45 R/C, .40 R/C w/Perry carb & exhaust baffle , .21 rear exhaust, a sleeper & Sportster .28 & .65. Have really enjoyed them all! MAX H. I have owned and flown several early seventies .40 and .61 K&B engines. All worked flawlessly.

I flew a K&B .19 Green Head and several .35 Stallion control line engines before that. Again, no problems.

Later on I bought two .28 Sportsters for R/C. No problems once I got them broken-in properly.

The K&B pumper .61 was a great engine in its time. They ran real strong and reliable, till the diaphram in the pump went out. If Conley doesn't have a diaphram you are probably out of luck. However you can use it with a new carb. It will still run strong as they had perry ports and were almost as strong as a modern engine. You could leave the pump in place and just not use it, or replace the backplate.

Well I pulled out the old doorstop (.61) and I think the pump still pumps, as in the diaphragm appears to be fine. Big black Perry carb with the needle and idle disc. I don't have a muffler for it but it ran (loud). Might need a new ring and was pretty fussy. Come get it.

The K&B 61's with the factory Perry pump in the back plate and a Perry pumper carb, did not have PDP ports.

The only ones with Perry Directional ports, came from Clarence Lee. They have C.F.LEE MFG. CO. stamped on the top of the left lug.

Enjoy,

Jim
