Congrats on the successful maiden reincarnate. Thanks for the advice on the tailwheel assembly too. I had already considered replacing it with a NMP assembly and your advice convinced me to go ahead and get one on order.

I used a small Sullivan tail wheel assembly on ours. Works great and is a lot lighter too Better main axels are available here: http://www.pspmfg.com/Axles12Scale40.html

I just ordered the Sullivan tail wheel assy: S861, 10 to 22 lbs (4-10 Kg), 3/32" (2,4 mm), 1-5/8" (41 mm). I have the NMP tail wheel assy. that Rebellion recommended coming also. So between the one that comes in the kit and you guy's help I ought to get a tail end that will work!

Not to be disrespectful in any way Balsafire but I call things as I see them and I have to say...that is one nasty looking pipe on your other than that great looking “Downer”. From the JB Weld to the copper soldiered pipe...that’s darn rough on the eyes Dude! I’d bet the performance side of that set-up is on the down side also? On the other side of the coin, I hope your maiden flight goes well for you and the plane flies great...please post back on the performance of your plane with the BGX-1 3500. I'm kinda curious about how that goes!

No offense taken and yes it is butt ugly. Being a plumber I could have silver soldered it but the JB stands up to heat better and allowed me to fill the void on the sides(can't braze copper and aluminun just yet) . On the performance issue after some tweaking and tuning of the ugly pipe(that you can't see inside the cowl) I'm seeing 12,500 rpm running an APC 15x12 and a Perry VP20 pump and could probably get more if I leaned it a bit but don't want to push it to far.The BGX had been modified for some type of racing before I got it used and it pulled my 15lb Extra around like a foamie. It's quite loud but hey, it's a freakin' sky race car and I fly on the dessert anyway. If I don't get to 140 mph I'll be dissapointed . I fired it up and taxied it around some this evening and slow ground handling was ok as I could turn it around between the curbs by blipping the throttle. I put on a larger tail wheel and ran the springs pretty tight after reading reincarnate's post(thanks Doug).

The maiden is set for this weekend. I have a flying buddy visiting from Cali as both of our anniversaries are on Mon & Tues and his wife wants to see a 'Vegas show so I'm waiting for him to get here. Maybe I'll do the maiden with the cowl off so if it doesn't go well I can blame the pipe .

Happy flyin' all,
Rod

Balsafire.....140? Holy S$%#!!! I'd like to see it run that speed with that engine! Altho I doubt it......I wish you Great sucess with your maiden this weekend!!! Let us know.... I'm going to Radar mine soon to find out what she's really doing for top speeds.

Arizonan....Good to see you as well..I hope you get yours up soon so we can run them around together!. Hopefully yours doesn't make mine look like a little girls version!!! [image][/image]

bzyguy01...Your thoughts of running our planes togather is what drove me to this project. I have all of my parts and pieces finally so I just started un-packing and setting up. Won't be too long. I'm starting step 1 and was going to ask you last Sunday...how much did you or do you think I need to trim the wheel pants for the tire growth clearance? Maybe 1/4-1/2" total? I was going to take the needed cuts equally from the front and rear of each pant?

Yeah, I know I'm probably set for a disapointment but I figure if the Mike M. version went 130 and I'm using the same size prop spinning A LOT more rpm and my plane came out lighter(just over 11 lbs) I might get there with a good tail wind which, trust me, is very common at our site . That ugly muff saved a fair amount of weight and I was able to use the light tubes in the stab and save some more. For those of you lucky enough to have flown this bird and experience the fast landings, how fast is fast on the approach? If I go with a slightly nose heavy cg for speed will I need 2 football feilds to land it? Actually, the dessert has that much and more if I need it but would I be wise to ballance flat on cg? I usually maiden a little nose heavy and play with it from there but I have never flow a hot rod so this is new territory(not your grand dads Yak). Thoughts...

Happy flyin' all,
Rod

Hey Rod!!

Glad to see you're about to get her in the air. I balanced mine at near perfect neutral. It sits level on the balancer, and will tilt in either direction with just a nudge. It does land fast, but my 1/3 Pitts lands faster, or at least seems to. Set her up a couple of times, and I think you'll see that it ain't that bad. Mine didn't seem to want to stall easily at level flight and lower speeds, but I did manage a tip stall at a 90 deg bank with about 1/2 throttle, which nearly caused me to soil my drawers.

Have a blast! I think you'll like it!

BTW...I think your pipe looks fine. Of course I come from a mechanical background and appreciate those who create with material available. Shows the true nature of a builder to be able to use what they have.

Arizonan...

That should be enough. I didn't listen to that info given earlier, and ended up with cracked wheel pants. But another tidbit I chose to ignore was the upgraded axles, and I bent one. Hopefully you'll have better luck. The supplied axles just seem a little soft, especially on a less than perfect grass strip.

Arizonan...I trimmed roughly 1/4" from the rear and front. This is enough to clear.

Balsafire.... I hope she RIPS!!! I understand your thinking here and wish you luck. As far as hot landings....It comes in just fine. My buddy Paul has done most of the flying with mine as we have been testing but its not bad. I come around way deep and keep the descent at a fairly fast pace to keep the airspeed up and then try and be only 4-6 feet off the deck as I aproach the runway, Then I try to get her inches over the deck as I slow her down and add elevator to my final flair and she sets down real nice with a small bump or bounce untill finally on the ground. The bird does ok without stalling real bad at slower speeds but what I did notice are the unexpected snaps it will do at less than 3/4 throttle speeds during maneuvers.
I've still been waiting for a 15X12 to try...LHS out of stock!

Shayne
