I noticed looking at this article that the Sundowner was balanced the correct way up.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=929

When I balanced mine I it was upside down and believe it said to do it this way in the manual, which is correct?

Jason

I could sware in my "Sundowner" manual it says to make sure that you mark the C/G and ballance the plane INVERTED??? This article that RCKen wrote shows him doing the oppsite???

It does say inverted in the manual, not sure why. The Sundowner should be balanced right side up, as the center of gravity is below the wing and you'll get a more accurate result.

Low wing models should typically be balanced inverted.

I re-engined my Sundowner last night with a Saito 1.80 and it weighs 10.75 pounds dry balanced and ready to fly. Will fly it this week.

Craig.

I think upright is the way to balance. set the CG at 3 " and it will be fine. I never really paid much attention to upside or downside balancing either way seems to work. With the planes mass above the wing balance point it will only stay level in the one position that it is balanced at.
Is anyone flying this plane with a Moki 2.10?
I think I will have my Parker Gold race champion converted oev in the next few weeks.

I am just about done with the conversion from the Gas Evo 35 to the Moki 2.10. It will be much lighter and simpler set up. The Radial engine mount just needed to have the holes opend up with a #8 drill and then I had to cut a 1/4" Ply ring that will shim the engine drive shaft far enough fwd to clear the cowl. The spinner will fit, I need a Moki prop nut adapter. I also ordered a Sundowner Muffler ($73) for the Moki from Bission Mufflers since the bolt holes and opening will not work from the EVO engine.
I could be ready to fly next weekend if the mufflers comes in time. Then hang on!!!!

You are going to love the way the plane flies with the Moki.

I used a Perry pump that takes pressure from the crankcase. The engine would run to rich and if you leaned the low to get a good idle, the engine would lean in the air.

Are you going to use a pump?

The problem I encountered with the pump was the pump giving too much fuel. The solution was simple. A tee, installed just before the needle valve going back to the tank, took care of the extra fuel. Now the engine is running perfect, just like my other two Moki's.

I'm putting a O.S. BGX3500 in my Sundowner, propping it with a 18x12 and should see speeds well over a 100 mph.

The 300 twin weighs about the same as the EVO35, so it's achievable. You'll have similar balance issues, and about the same handling and performance.

I have refitted my Sundowner with a Saito 1.80 and it's the best combination I've tried yet. Exactly the same speed as the EVO35, but almost three pounds lighter and it flies like a dream.
