This is harsh , but the only reason she crashed was lack of experiance on your behalf, being a vetran of model flight for about 10 months, and 200 odd flights, I am guilty of the same, but have been fortunate enough to ride the steep learning curve-hence my downer has survived. TO ANYONE CONSIDERING THIS PLANE- IT IS NOT A BEGGINERS OR EVEN AN INTERMEDIATE PLANE at a minimum you need to be able to recognise air speed(not by listening to the engine) & the pre stall point, don't fly on a field that requires you make the runway unless you are a very good pilot. she's a great plane, providing the grass is not up to your chin, just land down or crosswind fast as you like, it works, and is far safer than turning to wind with insuficent air speed. I deadsticked twice on the first days flying (once again inexperiance) and landed crosswind at hell of a speed, she rolled for ever, but was all in one peice.
'
I am sure that the word 'entry or 'begginer' or similar, is on the carton that this bird is packed in -thats all wrong H9

sorry for your loss, I hope you get another-good luck

It is a great plane but as others pointed out it is not a slow park flyer. It is designed to fly fast. You are not going to be floating this one in on a landing...it has to be flown in. You just have to look at the size of the elevator compared to an aerobatic plane and you realize it is about precision and control.

If you have any doubts about your ability, just get the smaller Sundowner 50. Should be a whole lot less to worry about with that one.

Remember, this is a relatively heavy and big plane and you need to make absolutely sure your setup is solid. Spend the time to epoxy the landing gear area. Check your engine setup...fuel lines...etc. Check your CG and throws and fly it pretty high until you get the hang of it.

Unlike others here, I went the electric route. Sure it costs more if this is your first big electric, but I have total confidence that I'm not going to have a deadstick. The added bonus...no cleanup and 140+mph.

Best of luck...

Me also have landed not so easy and bounced pretty good. Bent landing gear a little. You are not going to straighten the landind gear if you do bend it by hand. You will need a vise and some pretty big stuff to bend it back. The firewall stayed intact and did nothing to it when I broke the entire front clip off I have since gotten another and have it ready to fly and have flown it once since but the winds here have not stopped since Jan. other than just a couple days lol. But no problems with landing gear or firewall that i have seen. IF guys are bending them there landing harder than I do lol. Well other than the one landing.

"You are not going to straighten the landind gear if you do bend it by hand."

cut a slot near the end of a 2' long peice of hardwood decking or similar (slot is about 1 inch long across the grain) slip this over the gear as close to the wheel as you can get and using this as a lever she straightens out really easy, if you want to be cautious, use another peice of wood to pull against slipped over the gear down by the fuse. You really do not have to go to the bother of un bolting and using a nasty old vice to straighten it ! nice thing is, the wood does not damage the paint either.

I just finished installing my new MOKI / MARK 2.10 into the sundowner. It was if the plane was made for it. Could not have been any easier to install. Also, it would seem as though the sundowner kit that I have was very well made. I can tell that hangar nine has been listening, and made some changes to the kit. I will be going out of town for a couple weeks, but should have the maiden report when I return.

Cav. the paint did get smudged up putting in a vise but is worked. I tried not unbolting it as that is not real easy. But was afraid I would mess it up at the fuse as u stated. Good idea you have there. I will keep that in mind. When I crashed mine the landing gear held up fine lol. The firewall even thoug it broke right behind it was in excellent shape. It has medal angle behind firewall for strentgh and also on the landing gear it has medal angle. This is just the nicest plane and the looks are incredible. Hanger 9 outdid themselves with this one.
There is I have heard a site that has Sundowners of every color under the rainbow. Maybe a racing site or something. Said they had a pic of them lined up probabaly a 100 of them on the flight line anyone know of this site or one that might resemble it. Thanks.

They just are such a good looking plane, I must admit, that after assembling this bird, I spent a fair amount of time standing in my workshop just looking at it !

Last time I flew the downer, I felt that it pitched too easily, once down, I grabbed hold of the horozontal stab and was quite shocked to feel it rotating around the two fixing rods, I have now expoxied the whole thing up. Make sure that you check to see how secure your tailplane is on these rods, you might be suprized !
