I have it balanced perfectly at the point the manual specifies, not just within the range, exactly at the point.

12.75 pounds dry.

It looks funny but I can see where the fuselage and cowl wooll indeed provide a lot of lift.

MMcConville,
I'm assembling my Sundowner as we speak and I'm looking for any feedback as the OS 160 is not a box reccomended engine but was wanting to know what you thought about this setup? Can I expect the plane to fly faster than speeds of 110 mph? I want to go fast but also already have this engine on the shelf. I'm asking this question again as it was overlooked and never got any replies on the post so far.

Thanks
Shayne

Hey all.
Looking for some input or someone to tell me NO! DON'T DO IT . I'm toying with the idea of running just a header pipe straight off the engine. Tower has a drop header for my BGX that is intended to be used with a tuned pipe. I have no desire to have a 2"x24" pipe bolted to the bottom of my plane. I was thinking of using this header and extending the tubing but don't know how long to make it. I plan on running a pump since my tank is mounted mid ship so I don't need a pressure nipple and noise is not an issue at our field. has anyone ever done something like this? I'm really after some more revs from the engine and I know on full scale 4 stroke engines breathing is a key point but will this cause any damage to a glow two stroke? Am I correct that less back pressure equals more top end speed or is it the other way around. A long time ago I had a .60 size Chipmunk with a Saito .91 that had about a 3" pipe for a header and a Perry oscilating pump and it was pretty darn fast(I solo'd with that plane )but had a lot of dead sticks on long periods of low throttle. I'm using the Perry vp30 so I hope this won't be an issue.

Someone tell me I'm nuts or tell me how to do it . I've searched the threads but no luck, probably not a good sign .
Happy flyin' all,
Rod

Oh yeah, one more question. If the header works will it effect the needed prop size.
Thanks,
Rod

Shane,
I don't have a Sundowner(yet), but I have owned an O.S. 1.60 and still own an MVVS 26 which is the same as the Evolution 26GT. The 1.60 has a power advantage over the 26. Not a huge amount but noticable. I would expect a few more MPH over the 26. I know this doesn't directly answer your question but maybe MM will chime in.

Yes the open exhaust gives the most peak HP, but it would be hard set to get power anywere also for low end.
I think that you would have a very peaky power band and probly overheat your engine, burning the piston..... Just do the right thing and put a full length tuned pipe on it!

HAVE RUN TUNED PIPES, BUT A QUICK WAY TO EXPLAIN IS GO TO THE MACS WEBSITE.

http://www.macspro.com/tuning.asp

It will give you a full run down on all of your questions about running a tuned pipe and header.
Right now I am going to put a tuned pipe and header combo on a 1.20 AX on put it in a GP minnow.....

I have a friend flying an OS 160 on a APC 14x14 prop turning 9200 on the ground (not enough prop) and it is very quick. I am using a Moki 2.10 and am waiting for an APC 17x13 prop to arrive. Both engines are using Cline regulators and are on straight exhaust with the OS running 30% and I will be using 5% nitro. If the prop arrives soon I will get back with some radar numbers.

What is the largest diam. prop you can put on this plane???
At the 1st page it was tlked about the 35gt and that it would have to be proped down to a 15inch??

If you are not going to race, I think that the 40cc F3a ZDZ would be the best gas plant to go with.....
Light as a 26cc ggasser! with more zing!

I can't speak to what engine to use as I run electric but I have a Mejzlik Carbon 20 x 12 mounted currently with 1 5/8 " of clearance in takeoff attitude (level), I'd say the absolute largest would be 22 but very little clearance...

Got mine pretty much complete last night. With everything installed including Evo 26GT and bisson exhaust, and a 6v Rx pack,it ended up being just 12 1/2 lbs. Since the Evo is so fuel efficient, I stocked the 22 oz tank and installed a Sullivan 11 oz. I have my timer set on my other Evo with an 11 oz tank for 15 minutes in the air, and a 4 minute reserve. This also allowed me to install the gas tank on the C.G. The only thing I have yet to receive is the optical kill, and some awesome new graphics from badbrad graphics!

Another happy note is that our club may have a temporary home to finish the flying season. (We lost our field of many years unexpectedly 2 weeks ago) Currently we are working on securing an old landfill site for a permanent location. Probably 100 or so acres of nothing but flat land and grass! No more worrying about crashing in a cornfield of beanfield, and spending hours looking for planes. Theoretically speaking of course. No one ever crashes, we just get tired of flying sometimes.

So, you finally cracked open the box! I thought you decided to wait for several months? I guess you can't resist, especially given this one is awesome! Let's see some pics!
