Hi Folks.....

I have received a few reports of 60LX engines that were blowing plugs for no real good reason. Most of the engines seem to behave well. A handful have been toasting plugs even with good plugs and a good tank installation.

So we took some time to look into the issue a bit. And we duplicated the condition on the bench.

If your 60LX tends to blow plugs.....

1) Next time you run/fly it, install a second glow plug gasket (yes, two copper gaskets).

2) If that works to keep the glow plug alive, PM or email me and I can give you further instructions at that time.

Could the 60LX be had with a Nelson head?

I assume you mean the button head with glow plug small section area about quarter size. It allready has this system in it stock. Sad to say, had to recently tear mine down for a clean out job. You just gotta have one of these engines and run them as per instrctions. Best engine I have ever had, period. Like most high performance engines, you must take care of them per directions, and not get toooo gready on the needle. A kiss on the head prior to raceing (when cold) also is good.

Bob:
Purchased 15 merlin plugs with my last 60LX. None of them lasted more than one run in the 60LX, 35L, Webra 55, tt 46 or OS. Some died on start up. Think the problem blowing plugs you are discussing is a bad run of plugs. In the past, they have performed well and hung in there as good as any. Only thing quickly available at the local HS was OS 8, and McCoy 9. Went to them out of necessity as my gang went through the 15 in one weekend of club racing. No further problems in any of the engines.

roger....

the merlins are good. If you had a batch of bad ones (or believe you did) be sure to send them back to Dub or Al at Merlin ..... they want to see them.

The HD Merlins have shown to work better than the K&B in testing... and last quite well (basically similar to the Nelson HD plugs, just configured for sport use). Ive not blown a Merlin HD yet on anything.

Plug issue with the 60LX was traced to position of the glow plug element within the chamber.

The OS8 sometimes works better, only because the plug is physically shorter... thus the issue is sometimes avoided.
MC9 plugs survive by design (they were great ducted fan plugs), the element is up inside the housing a bit more, but they are a bit too cold to really allow the engine to perform at its best.

Bob:

Sorry, just read your request of 6-11 regarding sending the plugs back to Dub or Merlin. (Computer glitch?) Was possible at that time, could have dug some of them out of the trash, now long gone. Based on your recommendation, will order some more of the plugs. Don't expect Merlin to replace the bad ones, suspect there would be many more if they did. Just wanted to respond so you don't thing your request was ignored.
