I have 4 11.1v 2200Mah Lipos. (2 have had 4 months use, 35 flights each, and 2 have only a few flights on them)

Ive charged them at 1C using two digital chargers with Electrifly Equinox balancers. and the original align slower charger.

Ive set the Align LVP to the most conservative setting and also used an additional LV warning so generally land before the align LV cutoff operates (except while setting it up)

I charge my packs and leave them fully charge. Recently I did not use them for 6 weeks and now 3 of the 4 packs are ruined. They indicate fully charged but only last less than 1 minute flying (Trex 450).

I know its recommended to store packs at 50% charge, but would storing them for 6 weeks at 100% charge cause them to be ruined.
Im very surprised it has. I should have stored them in the fridge as its quite warm in the house where I stored them.

Any Advice

Most common recommendation is 50% charge and in refrigerator in sealed bag so no condensation as warmed up then recharge before use. The time is ???? I myself a weekend warrior just stop at 85% run time and leave on garage floor where cool until I go fly then charge. During winter here is like frige.
BTW each chemistry by other manufacture is different so all results will very ,,,,every year they get better soon none of this will matter.

Thanks.

I normally let them cool then charge them and keep them in a charged state until I use them. Perhaps I need to change this.

I didnt think it a good idea to leave them uncharged. Even if only 80% used.

Maybe it was the storage temp been too high also. Ill store them in the fridge from now.

Cheers

As I understand most lipos are best stored at room temperature and at 3.8v per cell if not being used for more than a week.

Thanks Bob,

Will try that.

Im just so surprised to lose 3 packs at once by leaving them fully charged without use for 6 weeks. Far to tempemental and costly. Lucky they were only 3S 2200Mah packs for Trex 450 and not more expensive batteries for Trex 600 sized Heli.

Cheers

lol, wow there are alot of different stories out there about batteries =P

I guess it just goes to show that there really isn't enough info about batteries when you buy them that actually come with the battery.

Anyways, my version is that you are supposed to store them with nominal voltage (ie 3.7 to 3.8v per cell, and this makes the most sense seemings how that's what all battery packs come to you with) and that you are supposed to store them between 40 and 75F, or roughly room temp but as low as 40F. As far as I know freezing lipo's basically ruins them, but I don't really know that for 100%

IF YOU INTEND TO KEEP THE BATTERY FOR A LONG TIME(3 MONTHs or longer), it is strongly recommended that the battery shall be stored under the environment with temperature 10-25,low humidity and without corrosive gas. The battery should be charged every six months to ensure that each cells storage voltage is 3.6--3.9v.
By the way i have used a kind of battery. It is so excellent. you can try it. www.danlions.com

As I understand most lipos are best stored at room temperature and at 3.3v per cell if not being used for more than a week.

The voltage will increase as the temp goes up this can damage your lipo b/c the cells could go over 4.2v.
It is best to store you batteries in the fridge in a sealed bag at around 3-5 degrees.
Also if you store your battery at room tempreture it will lose capaity much quicker than it would in a colder enviroment.

Check out www.batteryuniversity.com for more info.

3.3v is the cutoff underload.
If you store at that voltage you will damage your battery, must be 3.7V per cell.

Thanks RcShacknet

Ive bought a small fridge to store all my batteries. Set to the highest temp I can. (10-15C) Hopefully it will pay itself off by increasing the life of my batteries. (lipo, Nimh, Nicad)

Noted the mistake with the 3.3V

When they talk of nominal voltage 3.7V. Isnt that a the fully charged battery voltage. IE 4.2V when you take it off the charger. Then slowly drops to 3.7V per cell (11.1V 3S).

So what voltage would the pack be if storing at the recommended 50%.

3.7 to 3.8v is 50% =) 4.2 is fully charged, and about 3.0 is basically dead.

You want to store them with the same votlages the mfg's ship them, which is 3.7 to 3.8v per cell.

Thanks mrasmm,

Its a little confusing. I would have thought if the normal charged voltage of a lipo was 4.2v per cell a 3S pack would be designated a 12.6v pack not a 11.1v pack.

So a fully charged 3S lipo should maintain a voltage of 4.2v per cell 12.6v total but is called a 11.1v pack.

Clear as mud.

Cheers
