I took my Hawk IV out yesterday to practice hovering. I started it once and it hovered quite well, but the training gear came loose and I tried to stop it using the 'cut' button on my Eclipse 7 tranny. It did not stop immediately, and I had to use the button 3 times to get it to cut out.

I moved it to a flatter part of the flying field, and tried to re-start it. The wand of the starter did not spin in the starter shaft, and made a screeching noise. I tried this about three times and got the same result - with an occasional 'popping' noise from the muffler.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what the problem is?

Steve P.

If I knew what you meant, and how to fix it, I'd do something

I'd like to campaign for simple English on this forum - so that those of us who want to learn to fly these things can get help without having to learn a new language.

Steve

hydraulic'd... means that he thinks your cylinder filled with fuel so that it would not turn over creating a condition known as "hydraulic lock" take your glow plug out and see if it will turn over ok, use your starter on it for a few seconds and if it blows out a bunch of fuel than that was the problem....Rog

The excess raw fuel in the engine that causes the lock is usually a result of:
1 - if you are using muffler pressure, you must be sure that you do not fill the tank too much because raw fuel will then flow up the muffler pressure line and straight into the muffler. As soon as you turn the engine over, this raw fuel will flow directly into the cylinder with the first revolution. (when the piston travels below the exhaust opening in the cylinder). I recommend to prevent this, that you remove the pressure line every time you fill up., and reattach befor flight.
2 - if using muffler pressure, this raw fuel can also flow from the tank into the muffler when the heli is held in certain attitudes while being carried or examined.
3 - the main and/or idle needles are too rich.
4 - if one has overprimed the engine.

The screeching sound you heard was either the fan/clutch breaking loose from the engine and/or the hex start coupler breaking loose of the start shaft.(Thank god they do in these situations or you could damage your engine.)

So you should check and resecure these items before trying another start.

Bert
