I have the T-Rex 450SA, the manual suggest to use the 13 tooth pinion gear which I did. I am new to the electric world and would like to understand more the difference in gearing for electric motors for best performance. In simple terms which gear does what and which one will provide best overall.

13 would be recommended. 11 gives a lower headspeed (too low can bog down the motor), 15 gives a higher headspeed (stresses components, and has more Amp draw I think).

TR's right in that the 11T will give lower headspeed, but its doing it by lowering the gear ratio. Like going up a steep hill in 2nd gear as opposed to 3rd. So the motor/head will actually bog less. Even though the headspeed is lower, the motor is turn the same RPMs with less strain. Having said that, unless you're just hovering go with at least the 12T. It can handle it.

Of the 11,12,13T pinions with the 430L i liked the 12T the most.

But what blades and type flying are you doing?

On my SE V1 with 320 Hyperion carbons and doing 3D the 12 didn't give me the head speed I wanted... If I was learning and hovering with woodies, yes the 12 would have been prefered....

at 2600+ headspeed: Loops, rolls, 540 Stall turns, stationery loops.
I'm now running a Just Go Fly 450F with an 11T pinion governed at 2600 for woodies an 2800+ for carbon blades. At 2800 headspeed the Trex becomes a wickedly awesome machine to fly. It's a much more powerful motor than the 430L for pretty much the same price.

That's why I ask, every application has to be taken relative to how people are using it and at what level they are using it. Like people saying that a Raptor is the best helo ever made and they have only owned a rator and are just learning to hover... we need to know the whole story.

Another example would be someone saying that 11 tooth is best to find out he's running a different motor or on 4 cells...

Not that your info is bad, it wasn't, but we needed context...

You're flying a SA? What brand carbons? I really like the Hyperions...

Is the general headspeed people use 2400 for hovering and FFF, 3000 for 3D?

S with carbon Fiber frame.
I use the Hyperion carbon blades. I like the tech pro woodies but prefer to keep the headspeed limited to 2600 when using them. My preferred blades are 325's. They give more lift than 315's and I don't notice that they have a snappier response than the 325's.

I like the Hyperions too, You like the Just Go Fly 450F with an 11T pinion better than the 430L?? I have the new SE gearing so there's a difference there.... It has that much more power?? I might have to go shopping for more power... Still using the Align ESC? What battery? What pitch range are you flying? Good info, thanks!!

http://dhrc.rchomepage.com/ The DarkHorse motor pinion calculator is a handy instrament for calc. head speeds in relation to V and Throttle+pitch settings.

I'm using the dark blue main gears with the removable bearing hub. I think these are the V2 ones sothe gearing will be 'new' ie. V2?

I started with the 430l with 12T and pitch -9 to +9 with 325 woodies (these woodies work really well and they are teh weak spot in crashes) I always experienced som amount of bogging when going aroun in very tight turns. Then I noticed my 430l was not producing anymore and swapped it out for my JGF450F.
Having only a12T available for the JGF I used that ( different sshaft diameters). but found my headspeed to be ecessive (although power was AWESOME) The reccomended pinions for teh JGF 450F are 10T or 11T.
I have a tachometer and the JGF on 12T was producing way more headspeed than the 430l on 12T even though the JGF ia 3450Kv and the 430L is 3550Kv, so the JGF should be producing less headspeed with the identical gearing.
So I ordered the 11T pinion for the JGF and am now very happy. I've managed to now increase my pitch to -11 to +11 and have NO bogging.
I use governor mode ( Align 35X ESC) and at 78% the JGF on 11T gives me 2600-2670 RPM. In a well-balanced Trex this is absolutely sweet ( 325 woodies)
The Hyperions are for when I want to up the Headspeed to 2800 or so. At this headspeed the Trex really comes into it's own.
Flight times on the 430L and JGF 450F are the same.
The motor and ESC barely get warm. The batteries do get warm but to me this is normal. Even my Walkera4's 7.4v LiPo's get compareably warm.
I use DN POwer 15C 2150 and Hextronic D9 2200 batteries. The D9 are 20 grammes heavier and somewhat more bulky but are a good $10 less.

Great info, looks like I might want a JGF 450F... Yes, I bog at full pitch but collective management with my left thumb keeps it in check.

Ther are four of those JGF motor
400DH
400DF
450F
450TH
Got mine at helihobby.com
Have a look and makes your own choice. I have no regrets over teh 450F. I thing it's much better than the Align 430L for pretty much the same price. Needs 2.3mm pinions though.

Hi Tolla

I noticed you are using the Hextronic batteries, How do you find them ? ive just ordered 2 2200 3s lipos from unitedhobbies.com, they are 40$ nz as opposed to 120$ nz for locally bought ones, i bought two and a charger for less than one pack from here

they seem to have more power available than my DN power batteries.
They are pretty heavy and somewhat larger than the DN POwer.
At $33 a piece I'm not complaining. One pack has 16, the other 15 flights on them. I have another two on their way....
Oh, don't kwow whether it's a good idea but the accompanying literature say max discharge is 2.8v per cell.

For the first month I flew my Trex with the 11 tooth pinion, 35G ESC and 430 3550KV motor on 325 woodie pros. It was alright for learning altho it didn't have any climbout power and cyclic response was poor.

I've recently switched to a 13 tooth pinion and WOW! It's got extreme collective power with no bogging and my bird is verrrry responsive! The tail is also rock solid now whereas before it would always twitch when giving rudder input. I've also switched to the 325 fiber/plastic blades and noticed that they track perfectly in comparison to the woodies which would usually be 1/4" - 1/8" off at best.

The extra cyclic responsiveness has saved my butt several of times.
