Mike, have you poked around in the speed prop forum for ideas? There might be something interesting in there:

Keep the suggestions coming. The perfect plane is out there somewhere.

I have had more fun with Kougars than any other type of airplane owned. I kept a very heavy and crooked and ugly one flying for 17 years. I damage the straight one on flight number 39. After repair it will probably be crooked and last forever.

All of my Kougars have wiggled slightly and it takes a lot of elevator to fly upside down. Sometimes they are too fast for my skills.

Mine came from another club member who built it in the 80s.
He claims to have worn two motors out in it over a number of
years and then stuck it in a closet for 15 years.

He gave it to me about 4 years ago and I have been flying
the heck out of it since . I would fly it when it was too
windy to really be flying. Ive probably put 200 hundred or
more flights on it.

I even flew it in two of our club pylon races. But the airframe
just isnt too good anymore. The firewall came loose last year
and was so fuel soaked it had began to delaminate.

No problem. New firewall and a new cowl and some fresh
covering gave it yet another new lease on life. This spring
the new firewall pulled loose. The fuselage sides just wont
hold adhesive anymore. Covering wont even stick any more.

Its just time to let it go. It would take as much effort to
rebuild it as it would to build something new. It has served
its two owners well.

And I do have a new Kougar kit on hand I will most likely
eventually build another Kougar since its such a good flying plane
but for right now I would like to replace it with something just
a little bit different.

I have been flying the Kobra for a few months now and would also like to build the Kougar. I would make the following mods based on my experience with the kobra.
Split the elevator.
Bring the fuse halves together at the rear.
Extend the rudder to the bottom of the fuse.
Make it a tail dragger.
I love the way the Kobra lands, nose high and just mushes into a soft touchdown.
Have fun, MikeB

try a Chris Foss designs Acrowot.
I accept it's not swept but like an early post, it's tapered, very elegant (styled after the Acrostar) pretty quick and very aerobatic, yet with excellent lo-speed handling (altho' a bit slippery when landing - doesn't like to slow down!) Perfect match to a .47, will take bigger if you want and builds from Kit to around 5lb. Veneered foam wings and balsa liteply fuse.
It's very similar to the Wot4 from the same designer so has an excellent pedigree - see my profile and review for what I think of the Wot4!!
Finally, it's a British kit so will be quite unusual on your flightline!

Think about it - it's a stunner!

cheers

Rick

Mike,

Have you looked for an old Hammer 40 kit? I built one many years ago, and I think it meets most, if not all, of your requirements. Swept wing, .46 size, pattern-type plane. I stuck an old K&B .61 and retracts into it to actually fly pattern contests with it.

Hope this helps some...

Thats interesting. And no one else around here is likely to
have or get one. I like that too.

But where would you get one here in the US? I looked
around on their web page and didnt find any hints.

Hey now thats an idea. One member in our club has a really
old one and I did fly it briefly once. A kit would be hard to find
but I imagine the plans are still available. I believe it was in MAN.

And the name is perfect.

Not sure about availability of plans, and I don't think anyone has it in kit form, but have you considered the PC-9 or Tucano. May be able to find plans somehwre for a scratch build.

oops. The Hammer was not in MAN but was in Flying Models.
A Dick Sarpolus design. It was in the May 1985 issue.

I may just go ahead and get the plans for it even if I decide
to build something else.
