Your computer definately has the specs to run vista, but it's not worth it imo. I'm running Vista Home Premium on a descent computer by todays standards(better specs than urs), and I consider think if I was running XP on this computer it'd be a lot quicker. I'd say stick with XP home or MCE and wait until early 2009 when Windows Vienna comes out. Windows aero is cool, but pretty much useless. Heres a pic of aero:

i got a free upgrade to vista with my most recent laptop but i'm sticking with xp. there's no way i'm sacrificing the stability i have now for some cool visuals. if anyone is aware of any leaps in the os please educate us.

I disagree with the above posters
I am running vista ultimate on my laptop as my main operating system and love it.
It runs just as fast as xp and is equally as stable, I have never had it crash.
Windows aero is basically an upgraded graphics mode which includes translucent windows and possibly some effects.
I have it so it turns off when on battery to save power. Its not myuch of a difference.
Personally I would recommend it you have 2 gigs of ram which will make it run very smooth.

i have 2gb of ram on my laptop now. this is the first real life feedback i've received so, thank you!

what apps do you most commonly work with? i'll routinely have outlook, excel, photoshop, firefox, explorer and itunes open at the same time throughout the day.

microsoft is trying to make it so we do NOT stick with XP. they want to kill xp off and force us to upgrade to the terrible operating system we know as Vista. How do I know that? because they are no longer going to make licenses for XP, all software is going to be VISTA ONLY... XP software is soon to be a thing of the past. And what sucks the most about vista, is that its SLOWER. you need more memory to run similar speeds as we do on XP with less memory. If you thought XP was a resource hog, then you are in for a treat with Vista.

Microsoft is a greedy company.

have you thought about a 'vista look' pack? it changes your icons/wallpapers giving a nice visual change, but with no stability/slowdown problems.

You could switch to Linux, I recomend Ubuntu 7.04. If you really like Aero you could try Beryl, much easier to use IMO. Linux takes awhile to get used to and you will have more than a nights stress searching on the web trying to figure out how to do certain things, but once you get the basics its easy to use and you can pretty much do what you want.

Vid of Beryl. <check out the specs of the computer running that.

unfortunately MS is slowly still working out bugs in 95, they do this by presenting another buggy OS and call it the next best thing to sliced bread, unfortunately we sheep keep believing them, time after time, if you really want a system that works get a Mac,
IMHO your present processor is marginal for Vista, the video ram is also marginal, good amount of ram, you are looking at a new mobo, which means the processor probably won't be usable, and of course the video now needs to be pcexpress or some other expensive variant, you will probably find that in the long run, $1600 on a new Imac with OSX Tiger on board will be a better bet, the new Leopard OS is coming out in October which by all accounts will put MS in the shade, and it will work.
Please don't ask me how i know this, I used to believe in MS
