Hi,

I tuned my Savage X4.6 and ran a tank of nitro. My engine temperatures after one tank of nitro are between 255 and 265 F, I am ok with the performance, i see thick blue smoke from exhaust and outside temperature is around 75F. Are the temps ok? because according to manual temps have to be below 250F.

Thanks

You can run your Savage engine at around 260-280 degree F mark without any problems. As a matter of fact, for performance, the K4.6, S25, and F4.1 are actually comfortable at these operating temps. When you hit 300degree F or more, that is when you should be concerned.

Most of all, pay attention to the other tuning ques your engine emits. Look for the amount of smoke coming out, listen to the sounds it makes, and how the engine feels when you pull the radio's trigger. Do not rely on temperature alone as to whether your engine is running too lean.

I noticed that when the fuel in the tank is may be 5% left, engine started to rave. Is it normal? or do i need to richen little bit? i see thick blue smoke from the exhaust.

Thanks

When the tank is about to become empty, the engine will rev up as the fuel pick-up will ingest more air with what little fuel is left in the tank. As soon as it does this, let off the trigger, bring it in, and top off the fuel. It is actually best to keep from running the truck in this situation since you run the risk of your Savage running away.

During break-in, during the tanks that I am actually dring the truck around moderately, as soon as it starts to rev up from a low tank, I bring it in, put my foot in front of the Savage, and let it burn the rest of the fuel to complete the tank. (Actually, I richen by turnin the HSN a whole turn or two out to help keep it rich for purposes of break-in and I turn the HSN back to where it was to run the next tank to continue the break-in. I am not shy about tuning and retuning again.)

Like Savage Jim mentioned, the temps you are seeing are nothing to technically worry about AS LONG as you still have decent smoke from the pipe and no stuttering at WOT. If you don't have a smoke trail and the engine sounds like it is missing or stuttering, richen the HSN up and get the temps down.

With my engine, I personally start to draw the line at 260+ though....for me there's no reason to lean it out that much unless I was a racer looking for every ounce of power the engine has to offer. I'm also running a turbo head so I can make more power at a lower temp than a standard head Axial can. Lastly, I also like to run mine a little richer to minimize the effects of "HPI half tank" leanout.
