hey guys, my first post on this forum and im already conjuring up ideas of building a tank......getting a bit ahead of myself huh ?

ok basically i want an RC T-62 in 1:16 scale (dont we all?) with an airsoft cannon (like the hen long and marui tanks)
i have a basic plan of how i would go about making one since noone seems to produce an RC T-62 in any scale not even mentioning a full metal one with a working gun.

i was thinking of getting a 1:16 scale hen long tank and use the motors, cannon and all the other electrical components as the base. i would get something that resembles a T-62 dimension-wise the closest, something with a low turret so things would already be small making it easier to cram into a T-62 shell.

the shell would either be a plastic model kit (unlikely since they are pretty pricy, but it wold be easier even though not metal) or made from scratch out of brass or some other easily workable metal (seems hard to do but i have some model building experience and can always practice making shapes and stuff before i start). if its a plastic kit i will modify it internally to hold the electronics, if not then it will be scratch built to accept them.

also i thought id buy a 1:35 scale plastic kit from Tamya or some other company just as a reference for measurements (which i will scale up to 1:16 when building the real model) and details.

now dont hold yor breath for this one since im currently broke so this project will not start up very soon (should be sometime over the summer since ill have lots of time and nothing to do) and im not sure how possible this would be with my skills and tools.

any suggestions or ideas?
what metal would be best to use for this?
are there any decent 1/16 scale kits of this tank that ARE reasonably priced that i may look into converting? (reasonably = under 100$)
how are the hen long mechanizm's reliability and other aspects? i heard not too great without modification?
if i scratch build the body im probably not gona be able to make the wheels decent and dont really want to even dare making the track.
any place i can get the wheels and track separately for a good price? dont necessarily have to be metal but would be nice if the price is good. also dont have to be specifically T-62 tracks, perhaps T 34 or other tracks would work.

help guys, i have no idea where to start (i guess the 1:35 model is a good place since its the cheapest and will give me an idea what im dealing with) and i just cant shake the urge to get a T-62

The easiest way would be to build the upper hull out of styrene. As for donor tanks, how about a T-34 for its lower hull, suspension, road wheels and idler? Then a Walker Bulldog for the rear sprocket and tracks? Use the HL electronics and gun to power it. Sell off all the parts you're not using to fund the rest. The turret you could carve from wood and hollow it out or use it to make a mold of one in plastic. Evergreen styrene is my choice of material. The earlier T-62s had tracks that resembled the Walker Bulldog from the outside and were guided from the outside. The later design was center guided but for a scratchbuilt on a budget the M41 tracks will be a great compromise. Good Luck!

What an excellent project!

I know price is a concern but I will offer this as the most practicable build option:

1) Purchase a Leo2A6
2) The electronics will simulate a modern tank very well (no airsoft motor however)
3) The hull will be a close base for a T-62 with minimal rework
4) Minor cosmetic to running gear from kit parts
5) Sealed gearboxes will have superior performance - the main drive can handle high speeds ~45mph scale
6) Main gun near direct replacement
7) Track is already designed with running gear (although not accurate to T-62, better than nothing)

With the hull shortened and minor upper hull rework the only real challenge is the scratch turret! The tracks would be the most difficult aspect - casting would be the right way with matching sprocket, which is an expensive venture in its' own! If you do not mind inaccuracy, the Leo tracks work very well and track well at high speed (as the T-62 is fast).

After attempting and completing three scratch RC tanks, I have learned it is exspensive regardless the route taken, especially without your own machine shop and casting forge!

Another less exspensive option is get the 16th scale airsoft M1A1 and perhaps the hull and electronic components can be reused and reworked as an alternative to completely scratching the vehicle.

In any event, if you are serious about this project, I may have some extra Leo parts.

Hhmmmm Swathdiver has a good idea there with using a T-34 as a base for the hull. They are very similar actually.
Well i really want an airsoft cannon in there since a tank is pointless in my eyes if it doesnt shoot. You might as well have a tractor with steel plates welded on then lol. So i guess that rules out the Leopard.
The Trumpeter T 34 would be a good base since the whole wheel setup is very similar and the two tanks are very similar in size. I can just modify and replace certain parts like the upper hull and turret and drop in a mechanizm from the Hen Long Panzer III. The panzer is pretty small so im sure the airsoft mechanizm will fit in the T 62 turret nicely.
Heres how i think i can make the turret and other large parts out of brass.
I can carve the turret out of wood. Then take a sheet of brass, heat it up with something like a blow torch and place it onto the wood form. Then with a small hammer, hammer it into the shape of the wood form. After that add any separate details like Hatches and all. Of course i wont heat the metal before i put it on the wood form, so i dont end up making a little camp fire.
Making the turret out of styrene would be kind of hard since its a big dome like thing and from my experience of building models for architecture class with styrene, its not good for dome shapes. It can really bend in one direction at a time, metal can be hammered into whatever you want with enough heat.

Well i thought about this project a bit more and decided i may be getting in a bit over my head since im really a complete novice to RC. But not really model building.
So i will put this project on hold for a bit and try another thing i always wanted to do. AN RC version of a 1970 Pontiac GTO. Its simpler to get the sapes with a GTO than it is with a T 62, so i can use it sort of as a nice practice.
You guys are still welcome to give suggestions and i will still reply to them in this topic. And i can use all the knowledge i gain here for when i decide to start the T 62.

All HL electronics, airsoft units, turret rings, gearboxes, etc. are the same. That's why I think the Walker would be an excellent donor since you could use it's internals along with the tracks and sprocket. You can heat the styrene and let it fall into place on the wooden mockup.

As for the Goat, I have an RC 1/18 scale 1970 Olds Cutlass Supreme. It's powered by a single 380 motor and 4 AA batteries. I thought about adding better electronics, front suspension and LED lighting but have lots to do with the tanks and work.
