The sealed 12V battery in the Hobbico Powercore starter pack that I just purchased (used) seems to have an "open" internal connection.

Symptoms: with two different chargers hooked up, the voltage "floats" as it does with the charger disconnected. Current reads .2 mA through my DVM. The same charger reads 167 mA hooked up to my 12V field battery. Voltage was about 4 volts prior to trying to charge. After 10 hours of charging, I was getting about 7 volts (unloaded), which was slowly dropping. I didn't measure voltage under load, but I am guessing it will drop to 0.

My questions:

Is this repairable? Should I try to open up the battery to find and repair the problem? Or is it likely an open cell, or something else that cannot be repaired?

If it cannot be repaired, what is my least expensive, best replacement option? A (Hobbico) replacement battery is $27. (The entire starter pack is only a dollar more!) Should I just go ahead and buy another starter pack? I've read about people using two 7.2V batteries in series. Is that the best option, or is that a pain to charge? Where can I get good batteries at good prices (delivered)?

The battery inside is sealed. I never could use the powercore on anything bigger than a .46 engine...just not enough amps. Went to a higher amp battery with cables....not as portable but turns even my .91 4st. (starter is an older sullivan)

Two 7.2V packs wired in series will out perform just about any sealed battery out there.
If you felt like it you could carefully open up the Power Core pack and try to discover the problem. There may be six 2 Volt lead paste cells in there. I don't know for sure. They are kind of a different breed of cell. Not something we are used to seeing on the RC market. (I happen to have a pack of three from a dismantled emergency exit sign.)
Sounds to me like the PowerCore pack was overcharged and cooked or has simply lost it's useful life.

Try doing a search on the various topics you mentioned.
