now this makes all the sense in the world. I better take it easy on the engine with that 30% blend...

hmm i guess i was wrong but im pretty sure i read lot that 30% gets hotter

30% fuel will ignite sooner so if your head isn't shimmed correctly (with some engines you need to take away some compression) you can get pre-ignition. If you have pre-ignition then your engine will be nearly impossible to tune and run hotter along with blowing out glow plugs. Most .21 engines are shimmed for 25%-30% nitro.

I'm convinced I won't go any faster cuz of the fuel, so why not have better lubricant??

They still use the same lubricants in the 30% nitro fuels if not they use better lubricants which can help your engine last longer. Also keep in mind just because something has only 8% oil content like Odonnel's 30% race blend that doesn't mean your engine wont last as long. Its more about the quality of the lubricants then the amount. In fact more lubricant % can make some engines run worse especially the on-road .21s.

Just wondering how you got the 8% oil information for Odonnell. Its not printed on the bottle or anywhere on their website, that I've found.

yea, Ill just start with 30%. but why do some people prefer starting with 20% then switching to 30%, whats the reason for it?

None. They probably listened to bad advice online.

you hit the nail on the head...i was told 10% is easiest on your engine with less power, 20% neutral, and 30% harder on the engine with more power. thats y i started with 20 and went to 30...er 33% since all my lhs stocks is traxxass

so that brings up a the big question what brand???????????????????????????? I run 30% trinity or odonells and trinity hurts my lungs when it burns.

Some fuels smell like candy when they burn like the old style bean oil used in early two stroke motors forgot what brand but it makes the track smell good.

I use trinity platinum 20% or trinity 25% if my lhs has it.

The smell of nitro doesn't bother me, except when the guy right next to me decides to run mega rich and create a giant exhaust cloud But thats THEIR fuel...

When you add nitro 30% you need to run a little richer mix. You get more power, and more fluid passes thru the engine. This will help with lubrication. You should break an engine in with the nitro% you will use after breakin. However, you will want to use a sport fuel or mix in more lubricants during break-in. But because you run the engine with more fuel, you lose range per tank. So you may only get 10 to 13 min per tank. On the other hand when you use 20% the engine tune is a little more lean. You will tune to the temp so you really do not need to worry about that. Again, when you break in with 20% you will still want a high lubricant fuel for break in and then move to the race fuel later. When you are running leaner you use less fuel and therefore you will get an increased running time. So, for the short Qualifiers, 30% is better, because you get more power and you do not need to worry about the running time. A 5min qualifier should only use about a half of tank. If you are runnning a 15min or 20 min main then you may find less pit stops will help you more. So you can use 20% for the long race. 30% for the short race. On a long open track, where reaching high top speeds is important, and gearing up demanding more low end power is important, then you are better off with 30%. If you are running a short technical track where the engine is only at full throttle for 1 or 2 second blips and gearing down is what is demanded, then 20% works better. As long as you are shimmed for 30% then you should use 30%. If not use 20% or 25%. I use two engines. One is for technical tracks and one for high speed tracks. Each engine is tuned for for different fuel and clutch. I swap them out regularly. It is a question of what you want. I use a modified losi 8ight and find that understanding your options and documenting the results for your driving style is the best way to get a quick solid setup on race day. If you are a beginer, you will be having a harder time with staying on the track. So as you improve you will start to see trends in your driving. These engine will last based on the tuning and driving style more than the fuel used. If you never get above 75% power then you will have an engine that will last longer than a racer frequently using 98% power. If you get 5Gal thru an engine feel lucky and move on.
