Hey Mike, I am looking for a new 40 size 3d plane. I am currently flying a twist but am looking for a new aircraft. Alot of the guys around here are flying the profile jobs but I just don't like the looks of them. Learning 3d with the twist was alot of fun, but after flying the profiles, they are sooo much easier to hover the the twist is. I have a saito-82 and Jr ds-811's and would just like to know what plane you you recommend for 3d with this setup. The altitude here is 3500' so lighter is better even with the 82 up front. Any advice will be well used and appreciated. Hope to find and good looking plane as well as a great performer.

Thanks,

Mike S.

Hey mike s,

my 2cents.
Alot of folks like the new Showtime 50 for 3D for the .82 I am flying a lanier razor right now, and that was a mistake. I flew a showtime and its a better plane.

The .50 has a little more wing area relateive to the .90 and is a bit more floaty, I liked it for the one time. I will replace my razor with the Showtime 50 when I eventually crash the razor, since it is my everyday plane and murfeys law....

Thanks goose, the showtimw is one of the planes I am considering, the only problem is that is a little heavy, on some hot days the 82 has to work pretty hard to pull out of hover with the five pound twist. I'm sure changing prop would help, I just don't have much clearance with the twist, if I go to a 14-something it would probably help dramatically. But I can't afford a new prop everytime I land right now. Thanks for your input.

14x4W will rip it out.
I had that prop on my .70 os 4 stroke extra and it would hover it. If you need to. clip a half inch off the prop and resand it and rebalance it. the .82 should give youabout 500 rpm more than me. if not, use an apc 13x6 or a K Series Master prop 13x6. wider blades.

Also, use light components. this plane can fly on DS821's and a 1400 1/2 A size 6 volt pack. that pack weighs 3.5 ounces. I fly my razor on a 900 mah nickel pack. I ususally hang the charger on it when servicing it. It will fly 3 flights but I never do more than 2.

I want to throw another idea at you. I am converting everything I have to the A123 M1 cells. No regualtors anymore. They are 2300's and boocoo current, and reliable at 6.5 volts flat as a board. 3.5 ounzes for a twin pack. I am even converting my GS planes over to them except that am using up all my old nickels for Ignitions.

Im at the war right now, but this fall I am converting my razor over as a test bed, and my 1/3 scale suky over for twin batts. From here on, that is the ONLY battery I buy. I say all this to keep it light.

Another thing, is on myrazor I moved the tank back, and bought a perry wobler pump shaved it down and mounted it in the engine area right behind the motor upside down and the motor is more consistent. Im using an saito .72 now. I switch between a 13x6 and a 14x4w prop depending on my mood and what Im doing.

Big thing about the 14x4w is that you are blocking alot of wind at idle when you are doing some downline or spin recovery. So throttle up IMMEDIATLY to mid range during pullout or any plane will snap out with no airflow over the tail. I buried my extra that way.

Waydown,

the showtime gear is long enough for a 14x4w.

I like the plane. Mike has impressed me over and over, and he is always willing to discuss the details the few times I have met him. The 50 I believe will be a long term keeper for me. I got the razor for nothing. Even at nothing it isn't worth the effort. So as soon as my crappy flying skills slam it during me trying to learn a rolling harrier, the 50 showtime will be arriving. In fact I plan to buy it, and prebuild it with my spare motor, and am considering the new small JR digital metals for it. the JR 3421 or the analog 3121. I also like the programmable hitecs since I have a programmer like the 5082, or 5245. Since servos have somuch power now, I am going lighter.

By the way, it is even important to seal your aileron, rudder, and elevator gaps in these planes. with lighter servos it will always reduce possiblity of flutter. any tape or monocote works.

Just my 2cents worth and good flying.!!

Hey Goose, thanks for your advice I will try the prop thing for sure. I mainly fly the large stuff but try to keep a couple of the small ones around for everyday beating and funflys. I just got the saito-82 and am still trying to get the performance that I want out of it and since nobody has one around here I am on my own. I will probably give the showtime a try once the poor old twist is done, my wife said no more planes until I finish the 87" extra, the 25 aircruiser, the somethin extra, but I'm sure she can be persuaded.

Hey this new plane hovers itself.....OOPPS!
