Is it necessary to baffle the cowl for the 50cc motor to prevent heat build up?
Does anyone have pics to post for the single cylinder round cowl?

That's a good question. On the two planes I have built, one had a DA-50 with a canister, the second has a 3mm TOC-53. The TOC engine started out with a stock muffler, now it has a canister.

In none of the configurations did I do anything other than just mount the engine. The DA-50's head fins protruded out of the cowl, the TOC's cylinder is completely enclosed except for the plug cap.

It's my feeling that both these setups have run fine with regard to cooling. I've never experienced any fading or loss of power that could be attributed to heat. Hot air exhausts through the gap in the back where the cowl meets the canister tunnel.

I am interested to hear others' experiences in this area.

Tom,

As you know I was running a fully enclosed Taurus 52 on my Edge. The only air inlets were the stock "cheeks" in the cowl and the lower faux "scoop" that I opened up to permit air entry. Incoming air at the cheek inlets missed the engine completly and the lower scoop impacts the middle cylinder head directly. Exit area was met by opening up the raised half moon on the bottom of the cowl. There were no heating issues that I was able to note with the Taurus installation. Speaking of half moons and cowls, that would be something nice to incorporate into the Extra cowl. When opened up, the remaining lip for the raised area creates a nice low pressure zone.

As for the Sukhoi, it should have more than enough inlet area to meet the need of any single that would fully fit. As in anything else, exit area will be the critical item, and there should be no probloem providing that at the bottom of the cowl.

It would seem the United Plane Smashers have managed to find my house without destroying the boxes.... ... Hope the contents are intact as well.

I have the updates of how slow they have started to come in now. Yes beleive it or not it's going slow. Right now I'm stopped due to the lack of parts. I was however able to finish up most of the odds and ends along with major components. All the servos are mounted. Including the throttle and choke. Fuel tank is done with the plumbing. And yeah. Here are some pics. There will be more detail as soon as the parts come in within the next day or so.

I was too hasty with my comments......Upon further review..... I have one wing panel crushed...... Dang UPS anyway! It looks like an angle iron was dropped on the box it punched through outer and inner boxes and the one wing.

And several ribs are cracked out board from the puncture.

Wow I'd be pissed if that was my plane. Make UPS to pay for it. File a complaint. But that's just something I would do because I don't take stuff like that very well.

Well that's good. Tom is great when it comes to standing behind his planes. He really does follow through.

Good news bad news. Good news is, is that I got some of the parts in that I ordered. Bad news is, is that they aren't the parts that I needed now. But other good news. I was able to get the batteries and the regulator from Smart Fly. Hopefully the weather will be nice and I'll be able to get the maiden out of the way.

Hey thewrap -

I think the hitech 5645 is a little light for the rudder, working solo. I think the word on the street is 300 oz.in. of torque total required.

Am I wrong?

No it's more around 150-180oz. I know it will put out around 160 with the 7 volts I'm planning on using. But I only need it to get through the first couple of flights. I plan on upgrading to maybe a 5945 or maybe a 5955. This should hold up for now. But if I need the weight then I can always use the spare servo.

Well today there was a very little change. My servo arms finally came in. So that was something I worked on. I was able to get the throttle and choke servos set up with pushrods. Other than that there wasn't very much work that was completed. I will send some pics tomorrow but I am planning on going to a jet rally in the morning.

Absolutely no need for a killer servo on the rudder, the 5645 will be fine. Of course a 5955 will perfor better, but not everyone needs to be able to do knife edge figure eights.

True but if I need to I can always add another or get a bigger servo.

Today I was able to get quite a bit done. My other parts came in, and 150$ later at the hobby store I'm in business. Although I don't think I'll get the maiden done tomorrow. But the motor is running the CG is perfect. I just wish this project would end. I'll post some pics.
