My 5625mg servos have developed alot of slop/backlash after about 6 months use.

After stripping them down, I found the metal gear mounted directly above the motor wobbles diagonaly on its shaft but I am not sure if its the shaft hole in the actual gear worn or that the shaft has worn.

I don't want buy new gear sets if its the shaft. Can I obtain new shafts as well ?

I have noticed that both gear and shaft bearing surfaces look like steel which to me is not good.....

Hello,

What type of plane are the servos in? Also how many flights did you have on the servos?

What it sounds like is that you would need a new Top case (part number 55402). We have not seen the shafts wear on any of the Hitec servos.

Hi Martin

The model is a Precision Aerobatics Edge 540T powered by a DA50, I am running the servos on 6V and seeing they are rated at 9.4Kg should fit the bill as required by PA. The model has had roughly 100 flights.

I dont think the problem is with the servo case top because the gear wheel actually wobbles on the shaft as if the hole in the gear has become oval with wear.

I have since checked two other 5625 servos on a smaller model which are used for the ailerons and although not as bad as far as slop, are well on the same way. I swopped one over to the Edge model and found that it does not center well at all, it actually looks as though it bounces around the center point before stopping which is approx 1/2" movement on the tail surface. I also had to re-adjust the travel end points by some 23% on this servo to gain the same amount of movement on both elevators although before every thing was 100% travel with little sub trim, I guess they are from different batches but would expect them to be close ?.

Besides ordering new gear sets to see if that cures the slop, If anybody has them in stock here, I am not convinced they will last any longer. I can expect a little wear but not this much where there is something like 3/16" movement up and down on the control surface. I am now thinking about throwing these out and replacing with JR servo's.

Any comments would be appreciated as I don't really want to buy two JR's if I can help it.

Thanks Ian

Don't expect JRs to solve your gear-wear problem. Aluminum gears just wear out, it's a fact of life. In fact, some of the high-end JR servos have gearset lifetimes measured in tens of flights rather than hundreds (although I gather they will replace worn gearsets for free).

I've got a few HS5945MG servos and I'm surprised at how well the gearsets on these are holding up, especially since I fly 3D with big 4-strokes and lots of control throw (a recipe for gear-wear).

However, I'm sold on the new titanium-geared servos from Hitec.

Sure, they don't deliver the advertised torque but they're sure strong enough and those gears just don't wear at all, ever!

You can pick up the HS5955TG servos for around $80-$90 each on the street, which might sound expensive compared to the 5645 but if you factor in a new gearset each year on the 5645s then the 5955s work out cheaper in the long-run. Plus they're a *beautiful* servo.

I don't think I'll ever buy another 5945 or 5645, at least not wile a few more bucks gets me a titanium geared powerhouse that lasts for ever.

100 flights at 10 mins per flight = approx 16 1/2 hours continued operation, Not much mechanical use to me ?

I suppose the thing is that value for money comes into play as well, here in the UK we pay double what other people pay which does not help !

I've been using a second-hand set of JR DS8231 which have nylon gears on a Raptor 90 for about 5 years and they are still as smooth and slop free as if they are still new....

Hello,

With everything that you said. It sounds like the servos held up well. 100 flights at 10 minutes a piece in this size plane is pretty good. If you would like to go to a servo that we have not seen any wear in. I would suggest any of our TG series servos.

The Titanium servo will not show any wear.

I have the same problem with the gear wobbling on the shaft. The rest of the gears show hardly anywear. Mine are in a GP RV-4 that weighs 10 lb's and is .91 fourstroke powered. I also have four more brand new ones, so I took one apart for the heck of it. It to has some slop from the get go. The gear I am talking about sits above the motor on the steel shaft. The gear has very little bearing area on the shaft and look to both be of similar metals.
I am very happy with the function of the servo's, but not with the apparent cheap construction of the gear in mention.

There has never been in issue with that you are referring to. In fact EVERY brand of metal geared servo has the same or very similar contruction... I'm not sure how you can call this "cheap?!?!?!"

If you are having problems with any Hitec product I suggest sending it in and our service techs will be happy to take a look at it.

Mike.
