There seems to be a key way slot on the crank shaft and dive washer for my os 50 sxh. I do not have it. Is there even key that goes in it or what?

Those are not used on helicopters (since this is a helicopter engine . . ). I think the crank is a common part to an aircraft engine, and that's where the key and prop drive washer and such come into play.

The 50sxh shipped with the drive washer and woodruff key, the hyper does not because the vast majority of helicopter installations dont need it. The crankshaft on the H version is about 22 mm shorter than the airplane version.

Don't think you guys are understanding what I am saying.

Hi,
You do not need the woodruff key or drive washer in a heli.
You can buy the two items, bench mount the engine, and run it in before installation if you wish.

Interesting . . . I don't recall getting those parts on my SXH . . . maybe they changed that somewhere along the way . . .

What helicopter we talking about? Most dont use that drive washer, the fan threads onto the crank shaft, you tighten it with a crank lock tool such as shown in the Titan review in the magazine section, then you locktite the nut and tighten it down, again using a crank lock tool. If you arent using the drive washer to run a prop you don't use the woodruff key.

We know exactly what you are talking about, and you STILL DON'T NEED THEM!!!!!

Get it?

The ONLY thing that goes onto the crank in front of the bearing is typically a thin flatwasher. No key. No prop drive adapter. Nothing else. The fan hub either threads down onto the crank, and locks with a nut, and gets it's drive that way, or uses a tapered collet that grips the smooth portion of the crank and gets it's drive power that way. Perhaps if you tell us what type/brand of heli that you are building, we can be more specific . . .

These type of hub attachments are just as (if not more) secure than using a key, and also tend to run a heck of a lot more true . . .

by the looks of the pic you provided the silver peice goes on first, the side with the key hole down so it keys into the crank then the fan and one way bearing assembly goes on top of that, fan to the bottom. then locktight the nut and tighten onto crank shaft through the top of the whole assembly, to do this you will have to remove the clutch shoes first they are generaly held on with 2 screws easy to find, should be on top, once you remove these two screws lift the clutch shoes and one way bearing assembly out and there should be a hole down the middle of the fan peice so you can get the nut onto the crank. tighten it and renember that locktight (and you will have to use a crank locking tool, i just used a toothbrush in the rear of the motor with the backplate removed) then put your clutch and one way assembly back on with those two screws you removed earlyier renember locktight.

i hope this helps a little
Craig

No, the 'silver piece' is a propeller drive adapter and is NOT used in helis. Sorry Craig.
Tadawson has outlined the steps well.

Well it all together. The engine does need he silver washer. However I did not need the woodruff key as stated. Just locked he crank and tightened the crap out of the crank nut with blue loctite. I fired it up this morning and ran and flew flawless. Thanks for all the help. That little silver washer has teeth that grab the bottom of the fan hub when everything is tightened down. The crank is not to long at all. Everything fir perfect.
Again a big thanks to barracudahockey and tdawson!! Good to go guys...

I'd still like to know what helicopter this is in . . . I have not seen on in a very long time (if ever) that needed the prop drive washer, and would like to know . . .

Well Not so flawless flying this morning. My throttle servo failed. Can you say, "son of a, "auto"
2 servos that have failed on me in a week. But I did not have the correct throttle arm either. OR even a real throttle arm for that matter. A jr DS811 and a Hitec HS525 has failed.
What tail blades should I throw on the venture 50? Running a OS 50sxh, 30% cool power,SAB 580 mains, all metal upgraded
I test flew it with a JR500T and a hitec HS525BB on the tail(definitely not sufficient for this helis power compared to the 30).
I have a 401 with a 9254 on way for it. But tail blades? And paddles?
