Hi Guys,

Off late, we have observed certain probable structural failures in three specific cases of Composite ARF – Thailand Giant Model Aircrafts in use by Aeromodelling fraternity in India. One of each happened in a 2 X 2 Composite – 50 CC, A 2.6m Extra 100 CC and a 3.1m Extra (Super Xtra 3.1) – 150 CC.

We are currently flying approximately 30 models, both giant scale props and jet turbines of the company “Composite ARF” – Thailand.

Reproduced here under is the latest case involving the crash of a Super Xtra 3.1m. The model belonged to a senior flyer Mr. Umesh More who possesses considerable experience in building, maintaining and flying large scale airplanes.

today in the northeast was a beautiful sunny bluesky day, until my first flight of the day with my 2.6 composite-arf extra 300SX. right after takeoff on the downwind leg at speed, all of a sudden the left wing panel exploded. i tried the Bill Hempel trick and put the plane into knifedge flight which worked until i turned on to base and then the plane went down. not only did i lose the plane but one cylinder head sheared off my DA 100, so today was a big loss for me. now when i assembled the aircraft i found some disturbing problems with glue joints and assembly problems. when i drilled the firewall there was a 1/4" void between the fiberglass face and the 1/8" ply firewall at the top. i cant believe that a 1/8 ply firewall is enough for a DA100 even if it was installed correctly which it wasn't. next the top seam on the fuesalage was split about 3" long in front of the canopy hatch. then while installing the cowl i noticed the bonding strip had adhision problems. i chose to repair all the problems myself so i could fly insted of redtape waiting for replacement parts, i guess i overlooked some of the shody work. so tell me whose sticking QC stickers inside the airplane without inspecting closely?
