I have 3 of the later models and have been running them on 100% synthetic oil at a mix of about 20% without any major problems. I probably don't have as many hours on them as some people but have found that the synthetic is less "gummy" than castor so a prolonged idle time (like all winter) does not lead to a stuck engine.

You mentioned "..3 of the later models...", the instruction for OS 49-PI Type II wankel engine says:

Read in the page 8

Commercially available top-quality model
engine fuel containing 15% oil, either
synthetic or castor, can be used.

Note
Do not use commercially available low oil
content fuel.

Read in the same instruction page 11:

For this engine, use top quality
methanol-based model engine fuel
containing more than 18% oil either
synthetic or castor and between
5% and 15% nitromethane.

Two difference oil percentage in the same engine recommented in same instruction?????

I prefer 50% castor oil and 50% syntetic oil in total 18% oil in fuel as a assuranse agains engine damage in the new OS 49-PI Type II wankel engine.

And instruction for older OS Wankel engines before OS 49-PI Type II says:

For this engine, use top quality methanol-based model
engine fuel containing approximately 25% castor-oil
and between 5% and 15% nitromethane.

To prevent a stuk engine under storing if castor oil are used :

Before the engine are stored over winter to example, be sure the engine are soaked in alcohol in some hour and all dirt are removed from engine, check all the apex seals and leaf spring are ok (as i wrote above), give the engine after-run oil and pack in plast bag.

Hi there Motorboy,
It wasn't me who said that, I think you have sent this Question to me by mistake. It is ok, but whatever plans I had myself to work on the Wankels has been stopped for now, as I have other things on the go, with my house and the lifesize boat I just bought. I have that and some aircraft things going too so I am pretty swamped. My Wankel hasn't seen any action since before christmas. I will be playing with it again though, but I don't know when that will be. Good luck with your Wankel(s) and fly straight! PH.

There are some misconceptions about the OS Wankels out there. All OS Wankels are the same displacement. When OS made the P series, they redesigned the engine and raised the HP from .75 to about 1.25. They also added the "49" number, but the displacement remains to this day .30 cubic inches. The latest OS Wankel PI Type II needs no special glow plugs, as the earlier ones did, and have improved carb with a tuned velocity stack.

The newest Wankel is the safest bet for flying, as it has been refined over the decades (!) and embodies many improvements.

Fun Facts: Graupner started designing this model Wankel engine in 1961. It took until 1964 until they had a prototype that would run. In 1967 they got OS interested in perfecting and manufacturing the engine. In 1968 OS was running improved prototypes and in 1969 made a run of 50 pre-production units for testing. In 1970 the OS/Graupner Wankel was released to the public. By 1971 most of the bugs were worked out. So the history of this line of engines actually started 47 years ago in Germany.
