I have a good friend that is currently building a 40% Carden Extra 330. I went over to his house to view his progress, and while there we put the individual components on a digital scale to see what they weighed. The fuselage in the bones with no cowl was 6.5 lbs and the wings in the bones were 3.25 lbs with no servos or linkages. This seems a bit heavy compared to the Aeroworks and Bob Godfrey airplanes we have built and flown in the past. Is this in line with what most of you guys Cardens are weighing in at?

I just weighed a set of Aeroworks 300L wings with monokote, no servos at 3.75.

The Extra will be heavier in the end than the Aeroworks or Godfrey, but it will last longer. I've seen the 330 fly at 42 pounds and it's not hurtin.

By the way, what ever happened to the Matrix?

Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen Bubba or Wayne in a while so I don't have any updates on the Matrtix.

You should keep in mind that the AW 37% 300L is 2350 sq. in. and their Edge is similar. While the Carden 330s is 2600 sq. in. I don't know the exact numbers but the comparison for the Godfrey is similar. You can carry an extra 3.5+ lb and still be at the same wing loading.

Hey Tracy,

Great point.

I wish there is a way of getting the Carden Extra below 38 lbs without cutting the fuse sides up. Just ain't gonna happen.

I'll be happy with anything under 40.

Regarding the original post, I don't think they should be alarmed with 3.25 lbl wings in the bones. I think the wings to all of these mentioned are about the same weight per sq inch, the fuse is where the meat is.

I ran my Carden Cap out of gas at the Abilene field in a 20 foot hover not long after that avitar pic was taken. 7 dollars for new firewall and support from Carden, new wing tube and spinner, and some strips of glass cloth on the inside of the cowl. THATS ALL! There was no damage aft of the firewall. DA inspected the engine and found no problems. That was 125 flights ago. Thats when I was glad my plane was built like a bridge.

Hi guys,
I just finished building my carden and just wanted to inform you that it isnt too hard to get this plane light. I installed the KS full legnth tuned pipes (not canisters) which are about 2 lbs heavier than the standard mufflers. Last week i checked the weight of my 330 after i flew it and it was 38.5 lbs. dry! I used a digital postal scale t, so im pretty sure it is accurate. As you are building, just use a hole cutter around non structual intensive areas such as the cowl ring and assorted other areas. I sheeted the tail section as normal, then used a router to cut holes in the tail sheeting ( i mainly did this to lighten up the tail because of the heavy pipes that are so far back from the cg). I have flown this plane several times, and it is very strong, and does not twist at all, even in fast snaps, blenders, pop ups and anything else I can throw at it. Eventhough it is a bit scary carving up your plane after you have sheeted it, you will save alot of weight and it will be Very strong!!!!!!!!

I thought that was you.

I'm flying Unlimited as well. I have a Carden Extra on the workbench too. Flying a Carden 40% Cap right now and just ordered a composite-arf.com 40% Extra.

I talked to your dad last summer about hooking up with you, but our schedule changed last minute. Your dad said you might want to come out and climb around our Falcon 2000.

I'll call you guys when we are headed that way.

Later,

Daniel
