Just popped back to say I seem to have fixed the exhaust problem and now have quite a few fantastic flights clocked up on this plane.
It is such a great plane to fly (under statement). It just does exactly what it's asked every time. After waiting so long to get a biplane I now wish I'd done it years ago.
I've set my cog further back than recommended but it seems to love it. os 90 in the front and no lead anywhere. 6" pitch prop allows it to land on a dime. Awesome!!
Thanks for help and advice. I've recommended this plane to all my friends and they agree it looks perfect. (Can you tell I like it?)
cheers
Glen

Hello Glen,

I scrolled way back but could not find if you have a built up kit or an ARF.

If a kit, which one ?

Hi Zor, have to confess it's an arf. Bought it and a new os90 of a guy who'd had it 1/4 built in his garage for 3 years.

gasayers, welcome to the bipe club. They are lots of fun. Finally retired the trusty Sig Bolt after 330+ flights and maidened the new Super last Saturday. Saves me having to tear into the Sig trying to add upper ailerons and use that time for other projects.

Now if I can just get the new van so I don't have to assemble and disassemble it for transport life would be great.

Hi gasayers,

Saying it is an ARF is not a confession   .

So I now understnd that it was a kit that the fellow had built only about 1/4 .

You consider it was an "ARF for you" since it was partly built and I suppose you had to finish building the kit.

Is it a Sig or a Great Planes ? I only know these two having made such a kit.

Zor

It's the great planes plane. It definitely hadn't flown as the ailerons wern't glued and no hardware fitted at all. I've bought all the fittings and wires to do your rigging mod but haven’t got around to doing it yet.

One of the other great things about this is it fits in the surf in one piece. No assembly time at the field. Very cool. I put a "shelf" type arrangement in the back of the truck so it fits two fully assembled nitro planes, trex 700 and an edf jet.

Had the opportunity for flights #2 and 3 on the new 'SBolt yesterday and am still just as impressed. Flies like it's in rails, inverted is a non issue and even inside loops are stock. Only problem is the Saito 100 is a bit wonky on verticals so is not giving full power. It can prop hang for a while, but sounds a bit off and should be better.

If I have any complaint it would be the upper wing/cabane attachment. Having to install and remove the two 6/32 screws while on grass is a recipe for going home frustrated and will eventually cause wear. I will need to figure something more elegant out for that one.

Hello Cougar429,

This would not remove the annoyance of having to handle screws but a plastic garbage bag placed underneath would prevent loosing the screws and nuts in the grass.

You probably thought of that.

A couple of 2 x 4 a foot long on the windward side to prevent any wind of lifting the plastic bag..

As you know better do that work up on a picnic table if any around.

My Skybolt does not use screws on the top wing. It was built from the kit.
Also it fits nicely on the bed in my Ford van having a snooze on the way to and from the flying field  .

Glad to see you are enjoying a nice flying machine.

Best regards from Zor

zor, cannot remember if I have asked or if you have posted closeups of the upper wing attach. Would like to see how that compares to my earlier Sig and this one.

I Finally Have my SkyBolt Flying

I had this plane finished in February, and then proceeded to deal with major issues with the engine and mount.  I shelved the plane for the summer, and then decided to finish it so that my dad could see the maiden.  This airplane exceeds every expectation, especially the speed!  This is a GP Super and it I got it as an unstarted kit.  Dry weight it 9 1/4 lbs, and for power I have a YS FZ110S turning an APC 15x10.  I get 9500 rpm on the ground, and the flight performance is absolutely incendiary.  Absolutely unlimited vertical, and I can make any maneuver as big as I want.  Excellent airplane.

Hi Cougar429,

I am quite sure I have pictures showing the arrangement designed by Paul Carlson.

Give me some time tomorrow to dig out illustrations of the way the top wing and the interstruts are mounted ( are assembling).

I even have working flying wires that are not disturbed by removing the top wing.
The bottom wing comes out after removing two 1/4" dia nylon bolts.

Will be back.

Zor

JoshuaDA10,

Very nice 'Bolt!

At 9-1/2 lbs, I'm curious as to what you did (if anything) during the build process to come out so light.

More pics, please!

Cougar429,

I did some digging in over 5,000 pictures and came out with a few that should answer your inquiry.

It sure made me reminisce about the good times I had building the Skybolt.

Sorry we cannot write captions (explanations of each picture)

Hello RCU and especially Skybolt club.
I have read this thread from the begin and I found it interesting. Now I want to share my skybolt with you. It is a GP Super Skybolt and I have OS91 Surpass engine for it. I have made only small changes to structure: additional layer of ply over firewall, new tailwheel assembly, some sheeting over instrument panel and of course fiberclass cowl and wheel pants. I started buildind 2003   so it has been a long trip to this point but to be fair I have to admit I was missing a place for building for couple of years. The kit was really nice to build but quality of balsa was really poor half of them was too hard and other half too soft. I used provided balsa anyway with two exceptions: fin leading edge and nose side sheeting had to be replaced.
Currently I am covering the plane with Oracover (sold also with another name which I do not rememer now), see attached picture. I had plans for my own color patterns but then I found a picture of full scale plane with awesome colors and I decided to copy that. You can guess what the original plane is. A hint is found from this thead earlier this year.

Welcome to the "Bolt Club". Mom always said patience is a virtue and I would think you have that in abundance. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Zor, I replied to your post on my Rare Bear thread. Although the pics are good I could not fathom how the top wing attaches to the cabanes.

After some very wild fun with Rare Bear this afternoon I got right back on the horse with the Super and had a ball. This plane is a dream and, ego aside, makes me look a better pilot. Landings have been consistently perfect whereas the Sig 'Bolt was a lot more work.

Hi Cougar429,

The top of the cabane has the wires bent forward and they go in the openings you see in the last picture.

In there is two brass tubes and the bent wires go inside the brass tubes. A spring wire prevents the top wing from sliding forward.

If this is not clear enough I will gladly take off the top wing and take new pictures.
Just let me know.

Zor

Another of our group has a Super that looks a lot like yours when it comes to the interplane struts. Next time he brings it to the field I'll ask if I can pop off the wing to have a boo. With a van it shows up and leaves intact.

Even with that, with the alloy center plate on mine I don't see any mod to adapt that setup to how it fits without too much major surgery to be reasonable. I'll keep my eyes open, but if a new van finally comes at the right price this will hopefully all become moot.

Cougar429,

I found more pics showing the top of the cabane.

You can see the forward bend at the top going forward.

These bends go into some brass tubings cemented about half way in the thickness of the wing.

Each side of the tubing there is some hard wood bevels guiding the wire to line up with the tubing centers.

We push the top wing down and the bevels center the wires. We then move the top wing backward and the wires go into the brass tubing. Then a wire prevents the wing from sliding out.

Nice pics, but I don't think that will work here, The entire center section between the upper wing panels is an alloy plate I'm guessing as 1/8" thick. At the bottom are two bosses that get bolted between the fore and aft cabane uprights.

Cougar429,

I only did my best to inform you how the kit design assembles the wings on the Great Planes design by Paul Carlson.

That is the way I understood your earlier question.

It would not be practical to try to adapt this method to another design.

I just hope you now have a better answer.

Zor
