thanks for the picks zor. Love the skis, flying in the snow is real dedicated, however to be quite honest it was pictures of your wire rigging and how you've attached it I was hopping for if you don't mind.

You can always click the "Gallery" link near the top of the page and then scroll through all the photos that have been posted if you have the time. Zor's plane is a pretty distinct white with broad red stripes on the top and blue pinstripes on the bottom...and the maple leaf of course.

You can also "search" the thread by putting "flying wires" in the search box.

I've got the Fiberglass Specialties cowl on mine and it did take quite a bit of work to make it fit. But there was plenty wood that could be carved off. Once I finally got it sliding on I would check the fit carefully and then carve where needed with a razor plane. The chin block was where I removed the most material but it was plenty thick. By the time I got finished the front of the chin block was fairly thin.

It can be made to fit, it just takes lots of carving and fitting.

I'm getting dangerously close to starting the covering.
Here's how the cowl ended up after splitting the underside, opening it out and glassing over the gap

I didn't like the way the dash panel was done so I faired it in with 1/16" sheet:

gasayers,

I do not mind at all.
It is always nice to help someone by showing what we do without telling them what to do.

I have pictures but have to find them in my accumulation of nearly 5,000 pics.
It might be faster to take new pics _ _ _ Hee! Hee! L O L .

On my way to take new pictures.
Watch for my next posting.

gasayers,

Here are five pictures showing the flying wires attachments.

I do not know in which order the pics will load up so I will come back after posting and add explanations for the pics.

Explanations will be here.

There is 10 wires. Each side has 3 flying wires from bottom of fuselage to top end of the interfstrut and 2 landing wires.from the cabane rear to the front of the bottom of the interstrut.

This is the same as on the full size Skybolts.

Pic 1 (top left of the stamps below) show the flying wires at the top of the interstrut under the top wing.
Note that the airplane is upside down.

Pic 2 is a closer view of pic 1 .

Pic 3 shows the flying wires attachment to the fuselage bottom. Each wire is adjustable with its own clevis.
The alumnum piece to which the clevis are connected is a piece of dural alumnum that goes all the way across the fuselage bottom and appears the same on the other side. It is completely independent of the landing gear mounting.
Do not get confused with the wires shadows due to the flash that was necessary to take these pics.

Pic 4 shows the landing wires at the top rear of the cabane wires. A single clevis adjust both wires.

Pic 5 shows the landing wires at the bottom of the interstrut front on top of the low wing.
in this pic there is an illusion of a wire at the rear end of the interstrut.
That is a flash reflection due to the gap of the aileron leading edge. There is only two wires attached to the front of the interstrut.

Here and there you may have to stand on your head to keep things right side up.

The little ferrules (alclad alloy) are hooked to the piano wires at top and bottom of the interstruts.

Please anyone _ _ _ I do not need corrections on my selection of words. The importance here is to respond to the query and not to play semantics.

Thanks, Glad I asked for the pics. I'd guessed how the bottom was done but your system for the top of the struts is simplicity itself and far better than the series of holes and braces and clevises I was imagining.
Cheers

Jaybird thanks for the heads up, I had no idea the gallery feature was available. cool, very slow and didn't quite come up with the pics I was after. Couldn't see the top.

The U/C came from here as did the cowl.  The carbon composite (ie a mix of carbon and glass cloth) U/C is not an exact match being a little taller, so I raised the mounting plate in the fuselage by 1/2".  After sheeting the underside and cutting out the U/C section, I attached a 1/16" ply plate under the heads of the leg bolts and glued the removed section of sheet to that.  I still need to line the holes in the under-undercart panel that give access to the boltheads.

gasayers,

You can see now how I can remove the wings without affecting the flying wires.

They are tied (hooked) to the interstruts and stay there while the wings are slipped out.

This hobby offers lots of usage for our imagination   .

I pick up the upper wing or the lower wing tips and shake the plane up and down quite hard and I can see the wires doing their job nicely.

I did not mention that the wires are stainless steel measuring 0.043" diameter.
The clevis are all metal 2-56 threads and the wires are soldered into adapters that screw into the clevis.

Since the wires have no stretch (worth talking about) I just gain any backlash but do not put any real tension on the wires. They do their job just keeping the geometry of the assembly. I also have wires at the feathers.

All were welcome to this information.

I do not see anyone rushing to answer the question "Is that Obama flying that thing?

I have scrolled way back a couple of months and did not find any posting by Mods-R-Me .

Would this be a question posted in the wrong thread by error ?

Hi Jaybird,

I was trying to use a bit of my intelligence and figure this out.

Strange things are happening in this thead.

Meanwhile I finished the mods on my Skybolt.
I do not have to make major dismantling anymore to reach the battery and fuel tank.

I now have a 6 volts battery in there instead of the 4.8 V.

I will be flying tomorrow if the wind is not gusting more than 20 mph.

Well I've got nothing constructive to add to the thread at the moment but this is my new plane so tough luck.
I Love it. Flew it in between buddy boxing my mate with his new extra ( I really just did landed it for him.) and I had a blast. This plane is so well mannered.
Haven’t done the wing wire mods yet but I've bought all the pieces. The OS fs91 with the 14x6 f series ma is making landing so easy I do atlest 5 landings per flight. Very cool.
Cheers

Actually, you do. You just said it all. You're enjoying FLYING your 'Bolt and that's the point of it all...

My Sig sits awaiting attention, but its fallen behind in the order of things. Too much "life things" getting in the way - which is a good thing. I am also proud of myself in that I have had the chance to put a Great Planes 'Bolt in my kit collection but have resisted.

Congrats to you on getting your 'Bolt in the air. Enjoy.

Hello everyone,

I finally found a scale suitable for our modeling.

It reads grams, kilograms, oz (weight  obviously), and lbs and oz.

My Super Skybolt is lighter than I thought.
It reads 8.39 lbs ( 134.30 oz ).

I tought from other indications that it was over 10 lbs.

Last night I drilled 52 holes in my 'Bolt - for the Robart pin hinges!  4 hinges per aileron, 3 per elevator half and 4 for the rudder.
I've glassed the fuselage and fin with 16gm cloth and Poly-C water based poly resin, that went a lot easier than I was expecting.  Now I'm just waiting on a new hose for the compressor I acquired before trying my hand at painting with a touch-up gun for the first time.  Some warm dry weather might help too.
Up till now I've only brushed or sprayed using rattle cans so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.  I'll be using Solarlac paint from the company that makes Solarfilm, it's an exotic smelling brew that brushes on well, dries quick and is fuel proof.

I think that is the scale that most of us would want: a scale that reduces our weight and the weight of our models! That would seem to be a VERY LIGHT Skybolt Zor. Are you sure the scale is calibrated properly.

u2builder, ever fill out a Journey Log? THAT'S the quickest way for pilots and passengers to lose weight .

robc57, that stuff sounds nasty. Want to see pics of the glassing process if you have them, along with some of the final product.

I got the price for the Super from my friend yesterday. Now with all the other projects set up I'm hoping this one goes through with ease and I don't find the need to tinker too much. Still, have to sell a kidney to pay for it.............................

u2builder and readers,

Hee! Hee! L O L

Ya _ _ _ lots of people might just like such a scale that reads their weight much lower than reality.

I put a new 2 Kg bag of sugar on the scale and it read 2,039 grams. It makes sense that the empty bag could weigh 39 grams. Based on that I am satisfied that the calibration is not far off.

However I am back just over 10 lbs instead of 8.39 lbs.
I now figure 10 lbs and 4 oz.

I managed to put the Skybolt upside down on the scale sitting at the center of the top wing and the rudder just off the table and nothing touching the table and read 10 lbs 3.9 oz.

A thought came into my mind (while sleeping    and saw a possible error in the method of measuring.
I had added 55.3 oz front right wheel plus 56.2 oz left front wheel plus 22.8 oz tail wheel for a total of 134.30 oz total and that is 134.3 / 16 = 8.39 lbs .

The error is due to the scale being 2" high while the other wheel is on the table thus shifting some of the CG weight toward the wheel on the table and making the wheel 2" up carrying less weight.

A new set of measurements using a 2" high block under the wheel not on the scale gave a new set of weight.
69.1 oz front right wheel, 68.8 oz front left wheel, 22.9 oz tail wheel for a total of 160.8 oz.
160.8 / 16 = 10.05 lbs .

I am not concerned with the difference of 10.05 lbs (10 lbs 0.8 oz) and the 10 lbs 3.9 oz (10.24 lbs) considering such things as tire compression and horizontal side load of the landing gear.

Ah, yes, got to be careful weighing by individual gear and adding as just tiny differences in height shift weight. I often put my U.S. Postal scale on the floor, put a piece of ply on top of the scale, tare it out, and then balance plane on its spinner with this size plane as it is otherwise sometimes hard to balance entire plane on scale and still see the scale.

10 lb seems well in line with most.

I am one step closer to maiden having finally got the engine set up and running.

I have maidened my other 3 winter builds, so only the Bolt is left. Saving the best for last ya know.

Yesterday I flew my little 60-90 size Great Planes Extra 300 kit (63" span) , which I just had to purchase for about $100 from Tower last fall. What a great flying little plane. My Sig Hog Bipe has also been a joy to fly and my Sig 1/5 Scale Cub is also a great flyer.

The Solarlac is really nice to use with a brush, but it has a strong smell unlike any other paint I've used, so I imagine it's got some exotic solvents in it.  I actually like the smell of it but need to be a bit cautious with solvents though this doesn't affect me as cellulose thinners do.

Sorry, no photos of the process.   If you've ever covered with nylon, silk or tissue and dope, it's just the same except there's no smell and everything cleans up in water:

Sand to a decent finish, then cut the glass oversize and  lay it on the the first area to be covered.  I did each side of the fin down to the tailplane as one piece each side, the top of the nose back to the dash panel and the width of the cabanes as another, then finished by doing each side as one piece wrapping around to the centre on the underside and turtledeck and to the cabanes at the front.
Brush the resin through the cloth starting in the centre and working outwards, this will stick the cloth down quite nicely.  Don't worry about joins at this stage, just let it overlap the previous pieces or flop over the edge.
Allow to dry (20 minutes on a warm day, 2 hours on a UK standard day) then sand around the edges with 800 grit to remove the excess which will feather the edge.  Once all the panels are on you can start applying coats over the complete model brushing it out well, don't try to fill the weave in one go.  I used 4 more light coats to fill the lightweight cloth, allowing about an hour between coats.
The cloth followed the fin leading edge curves easily and without lifting, other compound curves are no problem as the cloth will mold easily.  I've used heavier cloths in the past and had problems with air pockets appearing even on flat surfaces but the 1/2 oz/16gm stuff just went on soooo nicely.
