I have the NitroModels Yak 54 71.5" wing span plane and have it completed but no manual.
Do you have an on line manual to view?
If not what are the control throw measurements for the ailerons, elevators and rudder? Both low and high rates.

Say Fastplane - I believe that Yak 54-140 is a model made by CMP (light purple, yellow and white). I'm about ready to maiden mine and like you, have no manual. I purchased mine from Chief Aircraft

There are several forums on this plane as the only info I've seen on the control throws is 12 mm. Not much to work with there, so if you come up with something, please share it with me. Also, where have you go yours balanced?? I've read forums where some have it balanced at 132 mm, and a couple that have them balanced considerable further back. Don't know about yours, but mine came with two balance ranges; one for normal flying, and the other for aerobatic. I have mine set half-way between the two balance ranges, 138 to 140 mm. I've been advised by one who flies this model that at 140 mm, it will snap roll on take off.

Any comments?

The thing that bothers me most is, "Experience is a hard teacher. She always gives the test first, and the lesson some time later!"

Grayfox, I have not seen any manual yet but decided to set the elevators and ailerons as below. Rudder on all 3 are set to max.
I use a JR Tx with 3 rates.
Elev: (H) 1 1/2" (M) 1" (L) 3/4" High rates have 50% expo (M) 30% (L) 0%
Ail: (H) 1 1/4" (M) 7/8" (L) 1/2" High rates have 50% expo (M) 30% (L) 0%

Most likely will try maiden flight on middle rates. So I am concerned about maiden flight but will take it easy and watch the taxi and take off.
I usually don't like planes with too much nose heavy, can make landings iffy sometimes.

I have not balanced the plane yet. But I have one page of instructions that say to set the CG
for normal flying between 125 - 135 mm
for aerobatic flying between 142 - 152 mm
I will try to set CG at 135 mm.

Thanks for the info Fastplane. Interestingly, that's about where I have my control throws set. Let me know how your plane reacts to those control throws and the center of balance.

Like you, I don't want a nose heavy bird (I've shed the gear on a Giles 202 because it was a tad nose heavy), but also don't want one so tail heavy that it is overly sensitive or that likes to snap-roll. I prefer to have my models set in the middle of the balance range, with a neutral nose/tail attitude.
