Hi Roy.....
The SJ50 with the black racing muffler runs almost the same as the 428 engine - fuel wise, and pretty much power wise.
The 428 Q-500 engine burns through 6 oz of fuel in about 3 minutes (at full throttle).
The SJ-50 with the black muffler, and suitable prop (8.75x8W or 8.8x8.5 would be a good choice) should be about the same, maybe just a bit less fuel. You will get some benefit since you can throttle back when starting, and you can throttle back now and then in the air too.
For most Q-500 applications using the high-output/high-rpm configuration of any of the engines, we recommend using a bubble-free fuel system. Either a 6oz bubble-jett fuel tank or 6oz tetra bubble tank is the way to go. Eliminates the risk of fuel foam, plus you get a consistant engine run right down the the very last drop in the fuel tank.
A conventinal fuel tank only holds appx 75-80% useable fuel. Below that you run the risk of sucking an air bubble or a lean run. So a regular 6oz tank gives you appx 4oz of flying fuel.
Most Q-500 designs can only accomodate a 6oz fuel tank.
