Can the Optic 6 be set for regular 2 servo aileron function and separate flap function (coupled with elevator)? I’m trying to set up flaps that are independent of ailerons. The airplane has 2 servos for the ailerons and one servo for the flaps, i.e., the flaps are adjacent to the fuselage and the ailerons are outboard of the flaps. I have tried several different methods including, CROW, ADIF and PMX1. All without success. If this setup can be accomplished, what am I missing?

Additionally, while using PMX1, I tried to change the switch selection. The instruction manual, on page 39, says to call up the Switch Select screen by repeatedly pressing one of the Edit Up Down keys until S/W SEL appears. I could never find S/W SEL. And it doesn’t appear while in PMX1 mode or any other mode. Again, what am I missing?

I have an almost identical question, Mad Mad Max. I'm using the Optic 6 and just got my Multiplex Cularis motorized sailplane, which has separate flaps and ailerons. I'm trying to figure out how to get the servos to work off an open channel, (ch5?), and still have the ailerons on ch1 and ch6, so I can program in aileron differental.

I noticed that the flap servo bays are set up mirror image in the Cularis, which means if I install them that way and connect them with a straight Y connector, they will deploy one up one down like the ailerons, which isn't correct. Must I go to a 7ch tx like the Eclipse 7, which allows each flap to plug into a separate channel, and each aileron to plug into a separate channel?

I think I figured out how to control flaps on my Optic 6!

First plug the left aileron into ch5 of the rx, with the right aileron in ch1.

Turn off the FLPN function. For programming aileron differential in, enable and use the ADIF function instead.

Plug the flaps in ch6 of the rx. Use the FLPT function to set the percent flaps to around 30 for starters. If later on you discover you need greater flap deployment, you can increase this number. The lever on the right side of the tx should now control the amount of flap deployment.

If desired, enable and program the CROW function to simultaneously lower flaps and raise ailerons for maximum drag on landing. The SW-2 gear switch turns CROW on and off. I have CROW on when SW-2 is down, but the default might be CROW on when SW-2 is up. When CROW is on, the lever on the left side of the tx controls the amount of movement of the flaps and ailerons. The right lever should still control the flaps.

This seems to work for me. Let me know whether or not this works for your setup.

Also, the CROW function will allow you to mix in elevator when crow is activated by the SW-2 switch, in case the deployment of up ailerons and down flaps throws off the trim too much.

At last I found my problem after numberous instruction readings and many attempts. Turns out that the left and right levels on my transmitter are not working. I confirmed this today by using a fellow flyer's Optic 6 with my new plane - worked great! So, it's sending my transmitter to Hitec for service. Only wish I had built this airplane earlier and found the problem during the warranty period.

could you explain to me, where you plugged which servo into which channel of the receiver?
i have a Cularis too, but i don't seem to understand the way you did the things!

Hi Pat,

First of all, I decided to use a Y connector with reverser to control the flaps. The input connector of the Y-connector I've got connected to ch6 of the receiver, and each of the two Y connector outputs goes to a flap servo. That way I was able to install the flap servos in their servo bays without having to modify one of the bays. So when I move the lever on the right of the OPtic 6 TX, both flaps move up and down together. Do you have your flap servos connected to a Y connector with reverser so they both move in the same direction in response to the right lever?

Well, i just ordered a V-Mixer (= Y-Connector with reverser, right?) from UH... because that seemed to be the only solution! I'm a little disappointed by the Optic 6! Because i will have one rx channel free, that i can't use, but i have to buy a v-mixer cable... But hey, UH sells them for 3$. The trouble is, i have to wait for 2 weeks now, until i can use the flaps :-(

$3 is a good price, as I think I paid $10 for mine. Too bad you have to wait 2 weeks for it. But I wouldn't try to fly the Cularis without flaps, as it needs flaps to land in light to no wind, unless you have a very long landing zone.

I don't see how you can have a free channel on your receiver, Pat, as I'm using all 6 of mine. And the Optic 6 only supports 6 channels.

Ch1 right aileron
Ch2 elevator
Ch3 throttle
Ch4 rudder
Ch5 left aileron
Ch6 flaps

it looks like the weather will be really bad for a couple of days anyway. My Landing Zone is about 300 Meters (roughly 1000 feet) long, so i should be safe ;-). For the receiver: i have a 8 Channel Receiver:
1: right aileron
2: elevator
3: throttle
4: rudder
5: free
6: flap
7: receiver battery
8: left aileron
But you're right, with this configuration, i couldn't program crow for the ailerons anyway. What Multiplex suggests is to add the flapperons to help the ailerons. That's not possible either, or ist it with the 2 mixers?

I'm not sure a V-mixer will work for the flaps, as it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs, but the Y-connector with reverser has 1 input and 2 outputs. The V-mixer takes the elevator and rudder signal and mixes them for output to the right and left V-tail servos. The Y-connector with reverser takes 1 flap signal as input and produces 2 outputs for the flap servos, reversing 1 output but leaving the other output unchanged.

With my R aileron in ch1 and L aileron in ch5 I'm able to use flaperons or spoilerons. But I would not use flaperons without flaps, as that could promote tip stalls. I would recommend using spoilerons until you've got your flaps working.
